8V92 Silver questions

I'm looking at an '83 MCI with an 8V92 engine.  It's a Custom Coach conversion.  Will it necessarily have the "silver" engine?  Is it important to know?  What's the difference between the pre-silver and the silver engine?  I have no indication that it's a turbo engine.

You really want a silver 92 and nothing else. DD had many issues with the pre silver motor and they were all expensive to fix. I would get the number off the motor and phone DD and they may be able to tell you if it's a DD number.

Be careful about just judging one by it's color! Rattle can over hauls are common among unscrupulous sellers! It comes in any color ya want at the Dollar store for a buck a can or about five bucks for a complete spray can rebuild! FWIW   BK

The 8V92 Silver engines began with serial number F73594
The 6V92 Silver engines began with serial number F83425

Any serial number after those above would be a silver engine.  Production of the silver began in 1982.

If it is a 92 series it will have a turbo. I have never seen or heard of a 92 series without a turbo.  Jack

For all practical purposes, all 8V-92's of the '83 era were TA's.  Most likely the engine has been rebuilt somewhere along the way, and as upgrades are made available, Detroit made them standard on the rebuild kits- so long as the rebuilder did not use an older kit.  Silver refers to the components that were installed in the engine.  If you have a healthy 8V-92TA, you have a Silver if your oil consumption is somewhere around 2,200 miles per gallon.  My first 8V-92TA was built in '79 and consumed a gallon of oil every 1,200 miles, or almost every fuel fill.  Good Luck, TomC

As always, thanks everybody for your help.  I assumed the silver series referred to the components and not necessarily the paint color.  I'll call the seller and ask for the engine #, and documentation of the bearing replacement that was supposedly done around 50k miles ago...total coach mileage now is 186k or so. Thanks again.
