He also said and I quote

It may be wishful thinking to think I can get a close site at the last minute but I thought it was worth a try. We may end up just getting a parking spot as close as possible and driving to the Canyon for the day. However, it would be nice to be able to spend more time there.

Thanks for all the great tips, especially the ones about Trailer Village. Herb and Marie, your link to the NPS was right on target. I went there, registered and was able to get a two night reservation at Trailer Village.

Don't know what kind of bus you have, but be advised that Mather has a 30' limit, strictly enforced.  Don't ask how I know (http://ourodyssey.blogspot.com/2005/04/we-are-in-tusayan-map-small-community.html).

My personal experience with the south rim - Desirable Hotel rooms impossible without 6 month or 1 year advance reservation - RV sites are NO PROBLEM especially midweek - Jacob's Lake suggested by UTAHCJ is spot on - the rise out of the desert to the cool mountains along with the Vermillion Cliffs, Navajo Gorge and the North Rim are the better part of the GC - MY best inside advice - the trips to the bottom of the canyon by burro and the overnight stay at the Phantom lodge are booked Waaaaaaaaaaay in advance - BUT if you show up at 6 AM in the morning and SIGN UP FIRST you have a chance at getting a spot due to cancellations (and there are many because of such advanced bookings) -HTH and HAGT
