I am going to try out a used Freedom Jazz 1000-12 Heart Interface inverter that my friend is selling for 40.00. It does not come with a manual.

It has a phone jack on the bottom, what is that used for?

Is this a modified sine wave inverter?

Is this worth picking up, or should i pass on it?

I could not find the manual or specs for this on Xantrex's web site, even in the "discontinued products documents" section.  (Interestingly, though, I did find that they are selling a remote switch for this model in their on-line "outlet store").

However, I can take some educated guesses based on the other Jazz documents and my knowledge in general of the old Heart product line:

The "phone jack" is for the proprietary remote control.  So this is where the remote switch I mentioned above would connect, or any remote display they may have sold for this model.

The Freedom Jazz was, I believe, an MSW inverter.

As to whether it is worth $40:  This is a pretty small unit, at only 1000 watts.  That's not even a single 15-amp circuit (1,800 watts).  And, as a discontinued unit, you may have trouble getting parts and service, and I was not even able to find a manual.  But used inverters can run from a nickel to a dime per watt, so $40 is probably a decent price if the unit is in working condition.  As long as 1000 watts is good enough for your needs, you probably can't go wrong.

Thanks Sean. It worked good for about 6 minutes then shut off due to overheating. I had noticed that the cooling fan was not running. I had removed the back to blow the dust out of it. It looks like a CPU cooling fan. Is that what it is? Running on 12v? If he will take 5.00 for it, i would be willing to swap in a new fan to give it another try.

Could be the fan.  I would measure the voltage, it's probably a 12-v muffin fan.  It should have the CFM marked on it someplace -- just get one at least as big.  You may be able to salvage one out of a scrapped computer, if you can find one someplace.
