I don't know if the pict of my bus is clear enough, but I have three roof tops with the front one close enough to blow on me while driving.  Add to that a 12v dash fan and I'm very comfortable.  When driving, yes you have to run the gen.  But remember, you have to get the power from somewhere-whether it be the big engine or the generator.  Granted, you'll probably burn a bit more fuel running a second engine, but especially in your case, you'll have an extra 20-30hp for the big engine if the gen is doing the work.  When driving, can't hear the gen either.  Plus, three roof tops will cost less than $2,000.00.  In 12 years, I've done nothing to my roof tops, except clean the filters and replace one shroud.  On a transit like yours, I'd highly suggest that you remove the bulky factor heating/air conditioning system in favor of more room underneath for tanks, etc.  I have 2.25" of blown in insulation, Peninsula lightly tinted glass-mostly only need 2 A/C's until it gets over 100 degrees outside, where I just kick in the third.  Good Luck, TomC

With the 6V71, the problem with the AC is a lack of power when it is being used.  When NYC Transit operated new looks (all 6V71s), drivers said, "You can have AC or you can have power, but you can't have both at the same time."  Things got better with the Westchester County bus companies.  They ordered their fishbowls with VS2-8 transmissions and 8V71s.  Having said that, as stated above, a cradle swap for a 6V92 and V730 would be ideal for your bus.

I think I am going to remove it.  Not only for the power issues but the unkown cost of maintaining the system.  I can reasonably predict the associated costs of aftermarket products.  That tied in with the extra space it occupies makes the decision easier.

Good looking bus!

My '81 fishbowl has the 6v71 and V730 combination.
It just passed safety inspection last weekend and hope to be on the road next weekend.

Can't wait to see your progress, keep the pictures coming.

Plumcrazy- doing a nice job.  It's fun to see how others attack the same basic bus.  I have a AMGeneral 10240B, which is a cousin of the GMC.  I kept both my doors, with the rear door going directly into my bathroom on the right side, so you can use the bath without going through the bus.  Also, just used 3/4" birch covered furniture grade plywood (no framing) since I wanted to use every inch I could.  As you can see by how easy the engine/trans is to pull, the V drive does have its' advantages.  Keep up the good work! Good Luck, Tomc
