OT: Site hosting and domain registration

Who would be a good choice to register a domain and host a small site.  I was planning on using GoDaddy.com but arent they the ones that were causing the slow response here?  Looks like Network Solutions, Godaddy and a few others offer domain name registration and hosting at reasonable prices.

yes go daddy is what this site is on....

I use web.com for my refrig busisness and seems very versitile for a small busisness.

Wasn't the real problem with Go Daddy just not buying the right level of service appropriate for a bulletin board of this size?

I don't think I would hesitate to use Go Daddy for a web site just because of what happened here.  Just buy the right service for your business.

It was more than just the level of package.

I've talked with a number of ex- GD clients that were extremely unsatisfied with the service.

My webhost is great for what little I do, but I wouldn't recommend it for anyone that was going to start a commercial operation, it's just not fast enough or reliable enough.

Good luck with your search, I've gotten some good deals from eBay. Our present package is unlimited bandwidth, domain registration and unlimited space for $10/year per domain. We have 2 domains.

Keep watch and figure out exactly how much bandwidth and space you'll actually need. Start out small, and then work up from there.

ActiveHost does a good job and has a high caliber support team if you want to use Microsoft based web servers instead of Linux.

Ross, I am far from an expert, but my experience with two companies has been pretty good.

I use mydomain.com for the registration and email/domain forwarding. 

I use earthlink.net for both my personal accounts and my business account.  The business account (web hosting) is less than $30 and that includes e-store software (Miva Merchant).

Earthlink support is less than stellar on the personal side and a bit better on the business side (was USA support up until recently).

The only down side of this combination is that mydomain.com uses bigfoot who uses dnsix.com to forward the email to my various earthlink accounts.  Earthlink software has a "watch status" on bigfoot since they either look like, or actually are, a spammer site.  On the personal side, earthlink shut down a bunch of my redirect email last year.  That did not seem to happen on the commercial side.

Probably not the best combination but seems to work pretty good for my needs.

Ross, I have to jump in here. I use Yahoo to host three different sites. The cost is $11 a month @ and the service is way beyond exceptional. The sites are extremely fast, they never seem to have any down time, and they give you a free program called Sitebuilder to build and upload your site with. Of course there's a way to ftp your site if you know html code.
