I used to think that this was normal but in some of the stuff that i have read and when you look at buses on e-bay for sale they say there's does not smoke at all. My 6v92t is a 1986 mechanical i believe i really havent messed around with it that much does not smoke on start up when cold or hot and does not smoke when i'am running down the freeway but when you take off from a dead stop it will give out quite abit off black smoke until i come up to speed. I always though that this was normal because of the lag time of the turbo spinning up. But now i'am not sure is this normal or do i need to make an adjustment it has down this sence i have owned it for 2 years.

Thanks for the help and suggestions Robert

Robert, no smoke no fire! Sounds normal to me. That is a sure sign of power.

I had to also install a fuel modulator.  When I turbo'ed the bus with the bigger injectors, it looked like a locomotive starting out unless I was very slow on the go pedal.  The fuel modulator goes on the left head (down head on a V drive) and prevents the injectors from opening until turbo boost is achieved.  It still smokes a bit, but not the serious thick black from before. The only drawback is that it is a little lithargic off the line, but quickly picks up speed once above 10mph.  Good Luck, TomC

My 6V-92 with 9G-90 injectors had a smoke problem. The turbo developed 20# of boost, which was normal, but took 7 seconds from a dead stop to do so.I installed a rebuilt turbo and reduced that to 3 seconds and a lot less smoke, but it still smoked more than I wanted to accept. All this with the fuel modulator set to the correct setting.I then switched to 9A-90 injectors and the smoke all but went away, but so did my horsepower. Once having the power, it's hard to live without, so I decided to put the 9G's back in. Some how I wound up with 9 of the 9G-90's, so I put the three new ones on the right bank which is hard to get at on my RTS. Low and behold, no smoke. I read an article that said Detroit Diesel stopped testing the Reliabuilt injectors as a cost saving measure, and there were a lot of bad ones getting through. I guess I had one. Now I have the fuel modulator a little on the loose side so it will get off the line well. It will blow a puff of smoke for a second if I really romp on it, but I'd rather be able to go when I need to.     Donn
