Regarding J&R Diesel in Riverside CA, Dustin there completely rebuilt my engine after it ate a camshaft, and I have complete admiration for and satisfaction with his work.   He did his magic on my Jakes after I had overhauled them with a PacBrake kit a few years prior, and they now work better than ever before.   Dustin is always fully booked, but maybe he can squeeze you in if it's not a major job.   If you go there, let him know that Mike and I recommended him to you!

Thanks for the additional thumbs up. He's in my list.

Update on the solving the problem. I dropped over to Don Zimmerman's place. It's such and odd business. most times I visit, nobody is working on buses and he's in the office scrolling the internet. Not like there is any shortage of buses, his yard is full, this time with charters and one buffalo. anyway, he is always cordial and free with his knowledge.

He immediately said switch on governor and rattled off how to get it off and what size wrench to use. He's done this stuff obviously. I did remove the switch and check the long jet/plunger. It looked clear but I cleaned it up and squirted some cleaner into the holes. Put it back and things seem fine but as mentioned earlier, it has been a bit intermittent. Will get it out for a short shakedown overnight trip before the main trip.

One thing I don't think I mentioned was another issue that started a bit earlier than the Jake/stalling issue. The main shutdown switch was not stopping the engine. I had to go to the rear and manually move that lever that the position pushes to cut off the fuel. while doing the switch cleanup, it dawned upon me that this both the Jake fuel cutoff and engine shutdown use the exact same parts.

Now it seems nearly 100% that this fuel cutoff value is the culprit. Bus shutdown is working normally too. Again, both were a bit intermittent so will see if it is fixed, even though there was no visible signs that would cause sticking.

Update -  The bus shuts down immediately when dash switch is flipped, another sign the fuel shutoff was not working properly. It used to shutdown but after a few turns, now it is dead stop.
