Anyone know how to use a Telma brake on a Dina?

The 1999 Dina I am looking at has a Telma brake, but it either doesn't work, or I don't know how to use it.  There is sort of a joystick that I think controls the level of braking, and a switch to turn the electric brakes on.

Anyone know how these are supposed to work?

You are correct it is all controlled with joy stick back is more braking forward is less brake, they work well except when you drive through high water , your cooling system does not have all the heat to deal with like the retarders. They are expensive to repair, most owners when it comes time to rebuild one just remove it, all it takes is a new drive line and flange. The Telma is used on a lot of fire trucks to keep the noise level down in the cities where engine brakes ( Jakes) are prohibited, I have one on my fire truck

I wonder if the Telma might be gone?  I was under the bus, and I remember seeing the driveshaft, but didn't see anything unusual.

How hard to add Jake Brakes to a 12.7?

Jakes are not hard to add you can buy those and the cover from most truck salvage yard  at a reasonable price depending on the model of Jakes you can up to 3 braking modes, you need to be sure there is enough clearance above the engine for the Jakes

My 1995 11.1 has Jakes so I imagine Jakes will fit on the 1999.  I am pretty sure I need different Jakes for a 12.7 than my 11.1.

I will have to check a salvage yard if I get the bus.  I have been to one or two locally.

How do I know which Jake brakes I need?  Would it be best to call a Detroit dealer with my engine serial number?  A 1999 60 Series should have a DDEC IV if my research is correct.  Even looking at official Jacobs documents I get conflicting answers.  One document I found said a 1999 would use 797a, but another document says the 797 brakes are for newer models.

There are also 24 volt and 12 volt Jake brake models.  How do I know what voltage my Series 60 would run at?  I am pretty sure my 1995 Series 60 is 12 volt even though the primary system is 24 volt.

I talked to a shop to see if they are interested in installing Jake Brakes for me, but they said no.  They did mention the DDEC might need a change to turn on the Jake Brakes.  My experience with Detroit Diesel dealers is they usually charge about $500 just to turn their programming computer on.  I am sure the local Detroit dealer could do the work, but they would probably only install new parts at a pretty high labor rate.

The series 60 11.1 and 12.7 are essentially the same engine less a few internals. Most bolt on parts are interchangeable. There are a few different models of jakes for the series 60. There are 2 cylinder and 3 cylinder units. With 2 cylinder units you can have low/med/high or with 3 cylinder units just low/high. Many MCI coaches use two 2 cylinder units with no jakes on holes 5 and 6 with a special step down valve cover because of clearance issues between the back of the engine and the floor.

And yes you will need the ddec programmed to use the jakes. The coach may already be wired but you would need to figure out the wiring and add the switch.
Some are called, some are sent, some just got up and went.

The 12.7 is basically a bored out 11.1.  The external dimensions are the same.  My 1995 Dina has the three cylinder Jake brakes.  If I knew the 11.1 DDEC 3 Jake brakes would work on the 12.7 DDEC 4 I would just move them over.  I would most likely get the Jake tuneup kit as the kits seem to be inexpensive.

I am going to have to study the wiring diagram to see if the Jake wiring is there on all Dinas.

Jake brakes on the DDEC IV don't require programing ,it is in the parameters of the ECM anyone with a Pro/Link with a DD cartage can toggle the Jakes off or on, you can change the HP setting on one to the setting in ECM they usually have a least 2 or 3 choices with a Pro/Link
