Of the original MCI windows in our 96A3 we removed and covered five of them with sheet metal. Two were replaced with Motion windows (best decision ever) and seven of the 0riginal windows remain.

We have noticed that the original windows are getting more and more difficult to see through.

They are after all 36 years old.

It appears that all the windows were at one time coated on the inside with film.

Last week while we were camping I took the step of stripping the film off one of the windows, the difference was dramatic, we can now tell what we are looking at.

I had assumed it was solar film and the tinting was for sun shading, but upon removing the film I was surprised to see the glass itself was tinted and there really was not much difference in the amount of light passing in or out. In full sunlight the window actually seems cooler to the touch with the film gone.

So either the film just degraded and the extra solar protection was lost or the film was on there for safety to keep the glass from scattering in an accident, assuming tempered glass.

What are your ideas on this?

Living in Florida I am tempted to apply some more solar tinting, although what is on there is still pretty substantial.

We have OEM window tinting in the glass itself and we use Solar shades and night shades from MCD.  Keeps a lot of heat out. If you use tint it actually works better on the outside than the inside as far as heat but has to be the type to be used outside that stick well.
