Spoken like somebody who has never experienced -40. I'm sorry but the 15 degrees between -25 and -40 are a different matter altogether from the 15 degrees between -10 and -25. Its -37 here this morning with a stiff breeze blowing. I'm not sure what that translates to in wind chill but it turns electrical cords into something like rebar and makes your mitts so stiff you can barely bend them.  Forget about gloves.

Like I said, we're close but not quite where you are. But it's still cold.

We have had periods of -30F or colder, but not nearly for as long as you guys. You're correct - there's a tremendous difference between -15 and -30 and it's amazing how things stop working like you think they should at a certain point.

The other night I was awoken from a dead sleep by what sounded like a gun shot. It was the house banging and popping as the temps got to below certain point and started contracting. Forgot how loud it can be. There are usually reports of gun shots and explosions made to the sheriff when the freeze quakes happen, and at least a few times in the worst of winter major roads close for a few days as the pavement lifts and buckles when the frost gets deep enough.

It's all enough for me and reason to not venture much further north this time of year.

You guys are making me shiver here in Florida!
When we met our awesome Ohio next door neighbors in Tok Alaska when we purchased that parcel, & since talking to the local town folk - they actually quit doing things outside when temps get to -30 to -40F but have been known to go as deep as -68F. We do have a special respect for people enjoying a living in that kind of weather... Hang in there there, there's 2 to 6 minutes a day being added to warm things up eventually. Geese!

We were freezing in Arizona too Dan this morning at 43 degree, Burrrrrrrr. and only up to 77 today maybe 79. Can take off the sweats in the afternoons.

the best part of living way up north is now that we have had a lot of cold and snow the roads are as flat as a pool table best they have ever been  . because of all the snow that is on them , the snow plows act like groomers ... smoooooooooth
to bad the government puts on 1/2 load limits on roads about march 1st until may 24th ish so not much building can be started because of the original crappy road construction

Can't speak for the Canadian side of things, but for us this winter (and the previous decade or so worth of winters) has been much more mild than things were historically.

I talk to people who've lived in Wisconsin their whole life who tell me of much more snow, much more cold, and much more ice on the lakes. Things are not 'normal.'

My MIL, (who died 5 years ago at 99) was a prairie farmer so was keenly aware of the weather.
She said that globull warming was a crock of sh#t.  There was nothing  now weather wise that she hadn't seen before.

Not trying to get in a pissing match about the weather and I have no reason to doubt that your MIL experienced things exactly how she said she did. Not every location in the country is experiencing the same thing so hearing what she said isn't surprising.

However, statistics related to weather reporting are statistics. Numbers are numbers. Math is math. You can make of it what you want, but it doesn't change the statistics, the numbers, or the math.
