2005 Cat C13 needs 271 mm^3 of fuel per stroke @1800 RPM to make 430 HP.

2005 DD S60 515HP needs 302mm^3 of fuel per stroke @1800 to make 515 HP.  The 2008 version uses 304.7mm^3 of fuel per stroke.

2009 Cummins ISM 410HP needs 215 mm^3 of fuel per stroke @ 2100 RPM to make 410 HP.

2019 Volvo D13 needs 240mm^3 of fuel per stroke at 1700 RPM to make 500 HP.

The C13 is burning 87.8L/hr to make 430 HP.

The D13 is burning 73.4L/hr to make 500 HP.  To make 430 HP would take about 63 L/hr.

The S60 is burning 97.85L/hr to make 515 HP.  To make 430HP would take about 81.7L/hr.

The ISM is burning 81.27L/hr to make 410 HP.  To make 430HP would take 85L/hr.

The C13 uses 87.7/63 = 40% more fuel than the D13.
The S60 uses 81.7/63 = 30% more fuel than the D13.
The ISM uses 85/63 = 35% more fuel than the D13.

Lots of talk about mileage on buses.

Keep in mind that the cost of fuel will be just one (small) piece of the puzzle when it comes to owning a bus. Lots of other things will make fuel cost pale in comparison.

2017 DD13  needs 311 mm^3 per stroke at 1625 RPM to make 525 HP.  It's burning 90L/hr to make 525HP.   It would need to burn about 74.5L.hr to make 430 HP.

It uses 74.5/63 = 18% more fuel than the D13.

400HP 6V92T uses 108.8mm^3 of fuel per stroke @2100 RPM.

It takes 82.25L to make 400 HP.  It would take 88 L/hr to make 430 HP.

It uses 88/63 = 40% more fuel than the D13.   About the same as the C13 does.  Not much more than the ISM.

Now let's talk about the real reason the new Diesels get such good fuel mileage. Our Detroit 2 cycle engines have about 1,500psi tip pressure. Series 60 and Cat has around 23,000psi. Now the Detroit DD engines with amplified fuel injection can have tip pressures as high as 38,000psi. Atomization is the real reason Diesels now get such good fuel mileage. If the engine manufacturers could increase the tip pressure to 50,000psi we'd see 10-12 mpg big rig trucks. But while they have injectors that can do that kind of pressure, the problem is finding a tip that will stay together. So far not. Good Luck, TomC

You're getting close to the pressure range of a waterjet machine at 80Kpsi. It takes some doing to control that pressure.

OMG someguy!

Being concerned about fuel mileage is ok for big fleets like Swift-Knight with 80,000 tractors, but is pretty pointless if you only have one unit.

Gag me with a spoon!

All you can do is fill it when it gets near empty, and give lots of money, lol.

In real life, you (or at least us) will spend more money in restaurants, campgrounds and entertainment than on fuel. And if we are driving across the continent (such as to Florida to visit our son), it is more or less $300 a day in fuel. It wouldn't matter if the bus got one mpg either way, you will spend lots of money. Flying and getting hotel rooms and restaurant meals is more expensive than using the bus.

So quit fretting about all those details. Get a bus with a S60/B500, and drive it for god's sake.

Thinking about what you said in your last post here when we are passing your area to Alaska from Florida & back. You're right! Just pull into the pumps so you can keep motoring & upon replacing wallet in rear pocket - grin & bare it!  8)
There are so many advantages of being home in a bus away from home the pumps are the last of our concerns.

That is SO funny Clifford. I remember machine gunning the forum with questions for months and you said the exact same thing. The learning and hunt took six months but landed me a beauty.

I did the same thing. But someguy has been on the forum since '05? Is that right or am I mistaken about it? 15 years? That shows an enduring interest, but why no bus?
