Cliff, I actually have a Dewalt angle grinder. Bought it several years ago before I found out how fantastic hf tools were.😘

Luvrbus, I'm having a hard time following your reply.  I'm not sure which bolts you are referring to.  I'm sorry!!  The starter is in the 9 o'clock position, when facing the rear of the bus from the inside.  The bolts I can get to that mount the transmission to the bell housing are almost exactly 2.75" apart, center to center.

2-3/4 in is the right spacing for the SAE 1 bellhousing for the 740 (24 bolts), you need to check the distance from the block to the top starter bolt that should be 2-3/4in also if you have it your 740 will work with your bellhousing

Thanks Luvrbus!
I took measurements from the top bolt on the starter to the block and they aren't exactly 2.75.  However, I'm not sure I'm measuring to the right spot on the block. Here are some photos.  Please let me know what you think!

FWIW and that may not be much, my MCI engine had a 102 tooth flywheel stock, so I bet that 740 with 102 teeth will work fine.  The ring gear is on the torque converter flywheel of the 740, the ring gear is on the flex plate of the 647.  Different approaches.  You will need a spacer for the flex plate to crankshaft, probably.  I made mine.

He is good to go but will need to remove the dowel and re drill  and heli coil the dowel for the center hub from the 6v92 to work on his 71 series so the bolt pattern will work
