Pantograph wiper question

I went out today to check on the bus and found that a chuck of icy snow had fallen off the roof and grazed the front of the bus. No real damage, but I noticed that the wipers were sitting askew.

When I looked closely, I saw that the pantograph arms had both separated into two pieces. This happened just above where the threaded rod is press fit into the bottom of the upper section of the pantograph arm. I marked the spot on the photo with an arrow.

My question is this...What is supposed to hold the upper section to the end of the threaded piece? Just a press fit? I was able to put them back together, but it seems that they are going to come apart again.

If my memory is correct, our 4106 had holes drilled through the union point with small cotter pins inserted. I'm thinking of doing that on these arms to be sure that they don't fly apart while driving one day.

Any suggestions?

Mine's loose, can be disconnected at one end, otherwise, you couldn't adjust them to be parallel to center post. Never had a problem with them separating.

So then I just need to jam them back into place again and call it done?
