Using A clamp on Ammeter

Jus bought a clamp on ammeter(AC/DC) and am wondering if it doesn't work or I'm not using it properly.

For measuring 120v amp. do you put the clamp over the hot OR neutral OR both. Same for the DC amps. Use the positive wire OR neg,. wire Or both.
