We are on our way to the Pendleton Roundup in Pendleton, Or. Stopped at the rest area on I-84 heading east to get out and stretch a bit and when we got ready to leave the bus wouldn't start. After much test ing it appears the starter is bad.

Looked all over for a replacement starter but had no luck. Pacific Diesel tells me that the numbers from my starter is for a unit that is no longer available. The replacement they show is not in stock at their location and it will be 5:00 pm tonight when the get it delivered to them in Ridgefield, Wa.

Today we will drive over Pendleton to meet up with Tom and Karen Goldsby, whom we are traveling with and attend the rodeo event, dinner, drinks, music, cowgirls and whatever.

It will be delivered to me by a driver, about a 3 1/2 hour drive.

There is a lesson to be had here! Pull out that list I put together three years ago with parts to have in the bus and order them???

I'll post further if for some reason the new starter is not the problem.

I agree with Clifford on the 39MT!
i replaced a couple of those huge starters in a row and then learned ab out the 39MT, next starter I had to replace was with a 39MT! Much easier to lift and bolt in.
also bought an extra 39MT as a spare and haven't had a bad starter since!

Maybe it's just the disc in the solenoid, you might be able to take it out and turn it over, get it to work again.

Ned, I'm not sure things are upside down here right now.
Got lots going on trying to find a place to move the shop to. (long story)
And have an 10 day trip to SD the 19th thru the 28th. (but someone else may run that for me)

Yup, agree about the 39MT !!!!!  :)
Used to own a 1968 MCI 5A and a 1977 5C.

Virtually all trucks are using MT39. Half the weight, takes half the current, lasts twice as long. Once installing an MT39, I wouldn't waste space carrying a spare with. Good Luck, TomC

Tom the spare wasn't being carried in a coach, but rather on the parts shelf in the shop as we were running 9 coaches at the time! (and doing side work on others too!)

Oddly enough after buying a spare i haven't had to change a starter on a bus since!
