4106 Driver Seat Adjust Height

My driver seat is still using the OEM pedestal, but for the life of me I can't figure out how to adjust the height.

There is a 'bolt' sticking out of the left side (window side) of the pedestal with a large slot in the end of it. I assume that it's used for something related to seat height, but I cannot make it turn in either direction.

There is a center shaft coming out vertically from the top of the pedestal with ratchet-like teeth on it. It looks like if I pulled up on the seat hard enough it would go higher. Problem is, I want to make it an inch or so lower.

The Operating Manual indicates that to lower the seat it's necessary to lift it all the way to the highest setting and then lower it. I'm hesitant to do this without knowing that the seat will actually go down after being lifted up.

Any suggestions?

Unbolt it from the floor and look up inside pedestal to see how it works and clean and lubricate. Don't remember whether you turn slotted bolt op push in.

My MCI pedestal has a lever that operates a ratchet tooth.  Press down on the lever and the tooth comes out of engagement and the seat can go down.  The problem is that it tends to lock itself into the rack and you need to really pull up on the seat to release it.  I need to really yank up hard on the seat, it releases, comes all the way out, the big spring inside tries to jump out, etc.  Then I can fit it together, operate the lever, slide the seat down and set the height.  It sound kind of like yours, pulling up real hard is the starting point, particularly if that is what the manual says.

Yes you lift it all the way up, then lower it. Then up one click at a time. That is how I think I remember how they worked in the older MCIs.

I see Brian beat me to it, and he is more wordy than I...

So... I've explored this thing from every angle but still can't get it to move.

There is a metal bolt-like thing sticking out of the pedestal on the window side. Has a large slot. Can't get it to turn. I put a vice grips on it and got it to move slightly in each direction. Seat started to move up and down a bit, but just a bit.

Is there supposed to be a pedal mounted somewhere? To this bolt-like slotted thing? The shaft coming out of the top of pedestal has ratchet teeth, so I imagine something inside the pedestal is engaging the teeth. I tried just pulling up on the seat, no luck.

I need to lower the seat an inch so that my left foot isn't just swinging, as it's getting hard on my back.

Thoughts?

Unbolt it from the floor, clean, lube, and inspect how it works. Then it will work nicely like it is supposed to.

I thought about unbolting it, but I was unsure if it was bolted from the top only, from the bottom only, or if there are nuts underneath somewhere that will fall into the abyss when I loosen the bolts on top. The carpet runs right up against the pedestal and I really don't want to peel it back unless I know that I will be able to accomplish something by doing so.

You push the button in on a 4104.

The seat is heavy and the size makes it hard getting a straight pull upwards  so if you have back problems, I'd suggest getting some help

Just reef that sucker into the sky, it will bang against the stops, and it will drop to the floor.

Take care, you can hurt your back, if you don't do this sort of thing...

Find an old bus driver to fix it for you?

Richard -

Seat bolts go thru the floor.

Best to attempt this with an assistant or two, one who can work upstairs, while the other assists thru the access door from outside.

You may need a can of Kroil to penetrate the frozen mechanism, add some to your bus tools arsenal:  www.kanolabs.com

Here's to an uplifting finish!
