I took a measurement on one of my Jake clearances and it was .034 vs .064 stock.  I imagine the only problem the tighter clearance could cause is if the Jakes come on while accelerating, which is an installation mistake.

I set mine at .059" on my mechanical 6V92TA. That works good. You cannot expect to be thrown through the windshield with the Jakes on in high (4th) gear. They feel a lot stronger in 3rd and stronger yet in 2nd. They actually feel about the same as on a loaded semi (80000lbs).

Lower gear ratio makes Jakes work better on a 2 stroke, with 3:36 gear they work in second ok with a 740 Allison ,oil pressure is the other key ingredient.
Geoff .034 is too tight sometimes I will go to .055 but that is as far as I go, and do not do it often.
That maybe the cause of your low compression on the 1 cylinder too

OK, good to know, thanks.   I'll buy a 0.059 gauge and try it.   I can't imagine another 5 thous would cause valve crash, especially if Geoff cranks his down so much on a MUI.

Thanks, John

I would not bother to buy the Jake feeler gauge unless you are adjusting Jakes all the time.  All you need to do is stack ordinary feeler gauges to the thickness you want.

Don Fairchild adjusted my Jakes-to .050 (if I remember correctly). At that adjustment, they really work. Coming down north bound I-5 Grapevine (5miles 6%) pulling my car (34,750lbs) I use my hi-lo to control speed. Can use an on-off-on switch. Good Luck, TomC
