Do a lot of checking.  do not just run to your local Detroit dealer and slap down a credit card.

get to a good mechanic in your area.  He can save you big bucks and get a good turbo.

uncle nedYep Ned ! I plan on taking it down to David for him to check as am not savvy enough to diagnose if I have a turbo problem or not altho I have several indicators that says yes .Incidentally ,I found them on the Internet from a low of around 700 dollars to a high of  like 2400 dollars !

I am talking from experience.  When I first got huggy she had been sitting for several years.

On one of my first trips she lost power and started to really smoking.

knew it was the turbo and went to find one.

after pricing them and asking around someone put me on David.

He furnished the turbo and did the install a lot cheaper than I could buy one.

The only thing he said he would steam clean the engine before he would work on it.

Only shop where you can see yourself in the shine on the floor.

Just be nice to Roxane she fills out the bills.

I am curious as to why you think you need a turbo.  What is your engine doing that makes you think your turbo is bad.

One easy test is to take off the intake side of the turbo (when it's cold and engine off) reach in with your finger and see if it spins easily and wiggle the shaft to see if it has any play. It should spin very easily with no play. Stiff spin, or excess play, get it replaced. Also, check your air cleaner element. Air filter is an easy $150 fix. Good Luck, TomC

Okay, Tom, finally got you on one!  You are supposed to have some play when you wiggle the turbine shaft, just not too much.  Judging how much free play is acceptable is a matter of practice.
