Canister oil filter

Does anyone have know a trick to installing these, I changes the oil and filter on the Scenic and had noticed it was dripping oil from the oil filter. When I tried to fix the leak by replacing the filter again I cannot get the top of the canister to seal. I've greased the rubber ring to hold it in place and then carefully installed the canister but it leaks each time.

I am now late on my planned departure to Lincoln City Or. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Jack

Are you sure you got the old seal off?  They tend to harden and you need a pick to get the old O ring out.

If the o-ring seal is the right size and the sealing surface is clean they stay in place without grease or anything

Mine has been dripping on my 671 for years now. Tried to stop it but no luck. Wish I had a spin on filter. Only drips for a couple of minutes but still makes a mess. Worse when it's cold. Raymond

Spin on filters are fairly inexpensive and not too bad to plumb... On our 53 all ours have been changed over. It's well worth the effort.

Check the bolt tightening torque. Mine leaked when cold out. Used a torque wrench and tightened to spec. I think it was 75 lb ft, but it is from memory. Turned out that I hadn't been tightening enough. It took another full turn or more.

LOL you guys with the canister type are back in the modern world of diesel engines again, the new engines are going back to the canister type DD has had them for 6 years

The big difference with the new canister filters is they are mounted upside down and built into the engine. That is, you remove the cap, the vacuum is broken, and the oil drains back into the oil pan. This means it is impossible to pre-fill the oil filter before starting. On the old canisters, they have an "O" ring at the top, AND a compression seal on the bottom between the bolt and the body of the filter. My bus originally had a canister oil filter. But that ended when it broke and went bouncing across the highway (299 in Ca) and dumping 6 gallons of oil on the highway.
Now I have a remote spin on for the oil filter mounted just inside the right side engine access door-very convenient. Uses a Cummins spin on filter.
Got tired of the canister transmission filter leaking, so converted to a spin on filter also. Just use a hydraulic filter. Both fuel filters are spin on. Good Luck, TomC

They are easy to convert you can buy the base for 300 bucks or the adapter for under 100 bucks me I don't care much for the adapter using a smaller oil filter but it is easy you can get those from Diesel Pro on the internet

Got it figured out, filter kit comes with two options for seal and if I used the right one it works without issue. Thanks again,

Why not tell them us what the problem was????
Also, those adapter to spin on filters leak when the seal
gets hard, so you still have to change that O ring anyway.

The problem was user error, I had changed the oil and filter about six months ago and only had moved the coach around the property. I had noticed it had an oil spot wherever it had sat and ran for any amount of time and wanted fix that before taking the 500 mile round trip to the Oregon coast.

Seems when I originally changed the oil I had thought rubber ring had fell out with when I removed the canister and fell into a full five gallon bucket of oil. I cleaned up the mating surface and did not notice it had a paper gasket still in place. How I got it together so that it only leaked a few drops is beyond me because I could not reproduce it and the leak was far worse after second, third and fourth attempt.

I finally got plenty of light under the coach and noticed the paper gasket still in place. As you probably know (new to me) the paper gasket is held in place by a grove. When I tried to fit the paper gasket in place with the old one still there it didn't fit so that is why I assumed that it was sealed by the rubber ring. Once I took the old gasket out  the new one fit and I was leak free.

This was all going on during a monsoon in Seattle in my gravel drive way so I was getting a bit frustrated as I was already three days late on my departure to Lincoln City Or. I am glad to say though that the Scenic ran great and the trip down here was flawless. Cruising speed of 60 MPH at 1800 RPM with 60 lbs of oil pressure and never going over 180 degrees.

As always thanks so much for the input and I aways learn from you guys.

Yep some of those bases use a flat paper or rubber gasket and some use a square 0-ring that is why most filers have both in the package it's happen to most of us before if we admit it   ;D
