What's the Best Roof Air Conditioner?

I'm not a fan of roof AC units.  I have a Duo Therm 13.5k that shuts off when it's over 90, my neighbor's 2014 camper has a Coleman that runs but doesn't make cold air, a driver at work has a 2015 Coleman Commercial AC that runs but doesn't make cold air.  I've replaced several on entertainers over the past year. I can't find a good source for R410, and that would matter if I could find a good piercing valve that doesn't leak more than the AC unit.

What is the BEST roof AC unit money can buy?  And I can buy...... it needs to be buyable, as in someone has to actually have them in stock so it can be shipped out.  I want quiet, smooth, remote thermostat, cold, and quiet, and smooth.

I know some here have made their own out of window units, but for most of my repairs I need to replace the roof unit with another roof unit.  There's no room or time to re-engineer a new AC system.

Thanks

You don't have much of a choice with low profile units, but Advent is a good unit and you can use the controls and upper unit from a Carrier or Coleman that is plus you save about 100 bucks not needing to buy that stuff

Unfortunately, R22 is not used anymore. My old Coleman 13,500 (have 3 of them), keep my bus cool with 108 being the hottest I've been in (they're 22 years old, never had a problem). Now with R410, the pressures are higher. Coleman still makes the 13,500. Duotherm Penguins are good. I have 2-15,000 in my truck, but they are older with metal fans (most are plastic now). The only difference between 13,500 and 15,000 is the 15,000 has a stronger fan-better for ducted use. I like the old fashion hang down. Get the most air circulation-we like lots of air swirling around us. Good Luck, TomC

I have a Penguin in my bus.  It shuts off the compressor when the outside temps are in the mid 90s. It's also loud.  And it wasn't even cheap to buy.

I should start manufacturing my own units...... I'd use quiet 134a inverter compressors, make them super low profile, have heat pump function, wireless remotes.  Of course, by the time I finished one, it would cost $2000.

I feel as if the AC companies dont care about quality any more.  We deserve better!

ok, my rant is over.  I'll keep looking for something.  Maybe europe has a better solution.

I sometimes wonder if low profile units sacrifice quality for appearance.
You don't have to believe everything you think.

I have  3 roof rattlers on the new to me couch . 2 are original ( 16 years old ) 3 speed fan and quiet . the bed room unit is 2 years old and only has 2 speeds and a lot more noise .   cant wait for the day there is a split unit ac that is a replacement for the roof shakers . you know quiet and efficient . I have been working on the featherlite with only a 20 amp outlet and I can only use 1 of the front a c units to keep the coach cool .I tried the newer rear unit but after  a hour or so it trips the beaker . kind of sad as in my mci I used the split unit all the time on a 15 amp outlet with way less noise and never a power problem

If you have a freezing problem, maybe freon. Also, if you know about when it freezes up, kick on off the compressor and just run the fan for a few minutes to thaw. I don't have that problem with my old Colemans's (R22 though). Good Luck, TomC

The Penguin ll has to be the worst piece of crap ever made  ??? I replaced mine twice in 2 years if you don't leave the fan on high they will freeze up and if you do leave the fan on high you need to go outside to have a conversation or take the TV outside.I will never buy another Penguin ll

Colemans Mach 1's. Don't care how tall or what they look like, I want to be cool and I am. One froze up on me and dripped water once but went up and cleared the drain it was plugged with a leaf somehow.

They are somewhat like tires. Someone will hate any of the brands.
I'll only use a Coleman.
I pulled one off a 1970 Chevy Stepvan in the junk yard that was there at least 20 years to install on an old travel trailer. Hooked it up when I took it home and it fired right up and made cold. Then pulled the covers, repainted, removed bees nests, removed capacitor cover, bead blasted capacitor tabs, added contact paste. It's still working fine for the current owner. Too bad the new models aren't as good as the old ones though.

We just installed twin 15,000 BTU heat pump Atwood Air Command (cormorant) roof units. They are quiet, and have quite an advanced digital wall thermostat that controls dehumidify, a/c, heat, timer, sleep and fan speeds. So far I'm extremely impressed with them. Extremely.

I tend to agree with you Luverbus!! I just had three of these things installed on my bus and you have to wear ear plugs when these things are on.Ain't had a freeze up yet.I really don't think these things get cold enough to freeze!!!!
