Well I have another issue with my power assist steering, Apparently the power steering pump on the 50 series is putting out to much PSI and I blew one of the old hoses first so I replaced all of them now the control box on the steering gear is leaking and also the cylinder >:( Then to top it all off on the way home the in line filter blew apart and I lost all the fluid and power steering. Called Luke to see if I can get rebuild kits and of coarse nun are available anymore but he thinks that its not going to help until I get the PSI down. Is there any way to cut the PSI down on a pump? He said the system was designed around 1500 psi and that pump is probably 2000 psi, also do you guys think I need the in line filter or could I just eliminate it since there is one in the reservoir can.
Thanks Jason

I have been working on class 8 trucks now for 25 years and never seen an inline filter in one yet. They just rely on the return filter in the tank. It would protect the gear if the pump went bad but it is not mandatory. Most trucks use a Vickers style vane pump, which the max pressure is controlled by the spring under the cap in the rear section of the pump. I'm not sure if your Detroit in your bus would be the same or not. If it were me I would grind the spring shorter if you couldn't just remove washers under the cap.

I didn't notice any cap, it looks solid to me, unless you have to remove the pump from the engine ???

Jason, if it is like the power steering pump on my DL with a series 60 it is a 2 stage pump,my pressure setting is on the steering box (2200 psi) call Straight Line Steering and tell them your problem they can solve it

Here's a picture of my pump. Would one of those PSI adjusters work for now because I would like to upgrade to the integral power steering in the future and dont want to do something to the pump that I cant reverse.

There is a pressure relief in the system now, so we need to locate it or a problem making the issue, some reliefs are built into to the pump.
Was this motor pulled from a coach, though I didn't zoom in, there is a name casting in the pump possibly. Also Jason where are the lines running and connected on this pump.

Did the donor bus have a hydraulic fan ? that looks like a high volume pump 26 gpm power steering pumps are around 14 gpm

Cliff, Yes it had a hydraulic fan

That is your problem you need to find the compensating valve that was in the system or change pumps, it's better just to change pump where you don't have all the returned oil back to the little canister to heat up

Would one of a truck with a 60 series work? and bolt right on or do I need one of a 50 series?

luvrbus

One from a 60 series will bolt up

Anybody have any leads on a pump? I called 3 truck salvage places within 75 miles of me and they either don't have any or they wouldn't sell just parts off them >:( Any help is greatly appreciated.
