A chunk of wood kicked up the rear tires severely dented the muffler.  It is not crushed, but it is a significant dent.  I was wondering if that is likely to create a back pressure problem and affect power/heat.  Is straightening the muffler an option or would that just leave internal damage in place?

Maybe a really strong magnet could pull it back some, or drill a hole and use a slide hammer, plug the hole with a rivet. If it is rusted some and weak, you might do damage fooling with it. It might be best to let it be. Take a picture, the board will give you opinions by the score.

Lin generally just two pipes that go into a metal covering. Unless those pipes are bent or crushed it shouldn't be bad. If you can take it off see if it rattles or if entry and exit pipes are loose. If it was really crushed down that much the engine probably won't start of would run rough.

If it is damaged too bad, a new muffler should be less than $200.

Took it out for a ride.  At first I thought I noticed a power difference but determined that I was on an incline when I thought I was level.  It did great on the way back.  All in all, I do not think there was a problem.  I will probably still try to straighten it a little but it appears to be okay.

Oh NO. Don't shoot it!
Excactly how big of a "dent" are we talking? If you are to place a straight edge across the divot what is the most depth you can read?

I seen it done before at shops where they removed the muffler and using plumbers test plugs they pump air till it rounds back out,and probably charged the customer for a new muffler  ;D
