EFT RATING ON TIRES

What does it mean when a tire is either EFT rated or not EFT rated.Ran into this when shopping for tires for the bus.

It has something to do with the rolling resistance on tires I don't really understand it completely all I know they cost more and suppose to save fuel.
I see the tour buses around here with EFT tires and axle mounted air compressor on each axle what that is for I have no idea but it seems like a neat way never to have to worry about tire pressure, it looks expensive though

That is an auto-inflate system for the tires. I run 8 trailers with it. Mine are made by Hendricks and work really well, we have not had an under inflation tire failure in the last 4 years.
As for cost, well they were included in the price of the trailer as a standard item on the East brand of trailers ( 53 ft all aluminium low boy step decks). Maintenance has been minimal on the system as it is just tied into the trailer air system.

Don't know if that is the same thing, but some of the trailers I was pulling for Swift have an inflation system on both tandems. It will keep them up to pressure. There is a little light on the left side of the trailer you see in your mirror. If it comes on, it means the system is trying to keep up to a leak that should be looked at.

I know what a Hendrickson system is my 50 ton lowboy had those I have only saw those on trailers,the ones I saw on the 2 buses were actually small axle mounted compressors on both-sides of the axle,front,drivers and tag I wish I had gotten the manufactures name.
Speaking of tire systems have you guys saw the weird system on the Volvo buses from Mexico those look like they could be trouble

The US EPA has a program called "SmartWay" to verify tires that are fuel efficient. If your tire passes the tests, you can brand it "Environmentally Friendly Technology" (yeah, I'd just use the initials, too). There's a website but it's down for rebuilding.

I bet the EPA still gets their disposal fee for the EFT tires
