$1,500 plus a core charge.  Is your core a good core still?  Other wise $450 more    It's just a used part though so it might be a gamble.  No association with the deal I just saw it on eBay and shared it.

Clifford there are lots of series 50 that were CNG that you can buy cheep and they use all the same parts except the head.

luvrbus

Thanks Jack I found 2 CNG series 50 engines for 800 bucks each in El Paso that are supposed to have new balance shafts and pumps in rebuilds, the engines have never been ran, crated and wrapped so I bought both engines

A friend in El Paso knew where they were at,the engines were left over when the El Paso Mass Transit sued DD over the series 50 CNG and all their buses were switch over to Cummins CNG . ? You have a dyno I have a 8v92 I need to dyno and Williams wants my 1st born for a engine dyno now

The CNG buses are a good place to find one cheap.  However, you need to know which piston type your engines has and which the CNG bus has.  The reason is that the oil pumps are not the same, depending whether your engine has the piston spray nozzles or not.  Same for the CNG engine.

There's a bullentin out from DD about this issue (shown below):

TO: Detroit Diesel Distributors
FROM: Technical Service
SUBJECT: Series 50 Balance Shaft and Oil Pump Service Information

ISSUE
Low oil pressure after the installation of a Detroit Diesel reliabilt® balance shaft and oil pump
assembly on Series 50 engines, particularly on transit bus engine model 6047-MK1E.

CAUSE
Use of the wrong Detroit Diesel reliabilt® balance shaft and oil pump assembly.

REQUIRED ACTION
Series 50 engines equipped with steel pistons have piston cooling nozzles ("P-Pipes") to
properly cool the underside of the pistons with engine oil. These engines require a high output
oil pump to properly distribute engine oil throughout the engine.

Series 50 engines equipped with iron crosshead pistons do not have piston cooling nozzles, and
have a standard output oil pump.

All reliabilt® Series 50 balance shaft assemblies come equipped with an oil pump. Installing a
reliabilt® balance shaft assembly with a standard output oil pump on an engine with steel
pistons can cause low oil pressure codes. Conversely, installing a reliabilt® balance shaft
assembly with a high output oil pump on an engine with iron crosshead pistons may cause
excessive oil pressure.

You MUST select the correct reliabilt® balance shaft and oil pump assembly when servicing
Series 50 engines.

You MUST select the correct reliabilt® oil pump assembly when servicing just the oil pump on
Series 50 engines.

REQUIRED MATERIAL
Table 1 provides a list of the correct service part numbers for Series 50 engines. The table
refers to the transit bus model numbers, since they are the highest volume of Series 50 engines.
However, the table can be used for ANY other Series 50 engine by simply referring to the Fuel
Type, Piston Type, & Block Type columns, to arrive at the correct oil pump and balance shaft
and oil pump assembly service part numbers.

I have this bullentin as a pdf, but have no clue as to how I can post a pdf.  If anyone wants a copy, they can pm me.

In my last shop, we bought ours from DD.  The best I recall, it is about $1,800 with core exchange.  You can only get rebuilt ones now, no new.  We've had rebuilt ones from DD, installed it, and have to return it.  It would have the same problem as the old one.  It's also large enough and heavy enough you really need a transmission jack (or similar) under it when you remove them.  They weigh a little over 200 lbs.  Because of this, it makes it more difficult to get one out of the salvage yard.

His is a transit engine 6047-MK1E  the CNG engines are 6047-MKGB so both take the R23530487 pump thanks I checked that before I bought the engines

The balance shaft assembly on the Series 50 should be replaced every 350,000mi whether it needs it or not. Good Luck, TomC
