I put mine in the rear compartment, and cut a 8x15 hole in the rear wall into the wheelwell area. I installed a steel, louvered grate, that is also screened, that I ordered from McMaster-Carr (mcmaster.com), in the opening and added a rubber mudflap about 6 inches behing the grate, just in front of the tires to block any water from getting to the grate.

In a word NO!.  This is the hinge for the door. If you look close, you will see 4 "thin" areas molded into this hinge panel. These match the spaces between the framing members of the door. I have cut the door skin and matching holes in the "thin" areas. If you spray paint the hinge panel flat black and put a piece of SS expeanded metel in the holes in the door skin, everythin inside the door "disappears"  Hope this helps, Jack
