Applying Black Pearl Paint

For you painters are there any pit falls and special techniques using black pearl base coat /clear coat.
I am going to repaint the black on the bus and paint the graphics that are gold now, is it best to strip the black or can I just sand it.

I don't want to screw it up the materials are pricey even the primer.The paint is in good shape and not peeling except 1 small are on the graphics

I got black paint at Walmart for a buck a can...check it out ...you could pant the whole thing for 50....lol

Maybe sign up here and get a free download book ...When using a black base coat, it's very important to remember that if you use too much of the pearl paint, it will force the color to take on more of the pearl, and render the use of a black base pretty much useless. To achieve the right color, the ratio of the pearl should be one teaspoon per quart of base. Once the ratio is right, the paint job will take on a midnight, color-changing effect.

Now guys I am serious  I need to get this done between the paint, the lighting and batteries this is getting expensive,lol when I paid for the paint it was like losing a friend

As long as the existing paint is flat and fully adhered you should be able to de-wax it thoroughly! , then sand it, tack cloth it, then top coat it.

Because you are over existing hardened paint your bond is purely mechanical so it will need a tooth for the new paint to stick.

Depending on the pearl you may have a pearl solid mixed into your paint and you need to get it mixed very uniformly and some will fall out of suspension over time.

I like pearl paints but I wont spray anything bigger than a fuel tank with it...

All pearls are tricky because the pearl goes in the clear coat therefore making color blending in the base coat nearly impossible as the pearl in the clear beyond the blend acts in a summative way with the underlying clear usually resulting in too much iridescence beyond the blended area.  I've had the best results in patching pearl black (also white) by simply refinishing complete panels rather than blending small areas like I'd usually do with other colors.  One other thing to watch out for with black is that it can have either a brown cast or a blue cast and the twain shall never meet--or match.  I learned that from patching paint on CHP cars, not that it mattered a lot.  Jack

Mine has base/clear dark paint. Headlights from behind in the rain cause significant glare from sides of coach reflecting into outside rearview mirrors. From 10 feet away, pearl black just looks like black that needs washed. Up close it looks great. Have/ had two vehicles with the color. Jmo. Make sure you suffiently scuff the original paint. Don't want it peeling.

I bought PPG with the wet wet plus clear coat for UV protection ,I've decided to prep it and let Mike spray it then I know it will be right lol it's only a 1100 mile trip each way

Dark colors with pearls are much easier to apply then lighter colors with heavy pearls. If I wasn't so damn busy I'd come help you with it. Have fun with the prep..that's the real work!

Back in the day, we would base color coat, then mix pearl with clear, then clear over that.  3 stages. 

Sanding is fine if there is no peeling.  Are you covering the gold with black?  Any other graphics should be stripped to bare metal and primed so there is no ridge or 'ramp' to existing paint.  May consider final sanding after you make the drive to be sure road grime is removed.  As you know, any oil will cause fisheyes in the paint. 

Only other tip is to keep the clear/pearl agitated to avoid uneven mixture.  May even stop and restir 1/2way through each gun fill.

Easier that way Cliff. All modern urathanes are very individualistic as to how they apply and react. Still shooting Dupont, Centari as base then Imron clear-coat. rdw
