Leaving next week to go South. Yeah !

Taking a toad for the first time. We were going to use the Tracker, but Valerie doesn't really like it. (It is a little rough...). So we are taking the VW Jetta on a dolly. (Yea it is a cheating TDI, and we are going to unashamedly spew out Prius repellent all over your country, ha ha).  The car is not new, but is still in good shape. The windshield has rock chips and cracks, so we won't replace it until after the trip. Should I bother with any kind of bra, or net or tarp to keep the stones from hitting it? I see a lot of snowbirds towing a car with their motor homes with no protection for the toad. I am thinking that being on pavement most of the time, it should not be an issue. What are your recommendations?

Aiming for the Dam rally for a first stop.

Couple of thoughts:

Bras and tarps especially can actually cause more damage because of wind flappage. It beats the tarp or bra against the paint surface and if there's dust or anything under there, bye bye clear coat. Couple of examples:

Best bet is ether body armor as in clear film adhered to hood or really, I have had the best luck and several others too with a "Protect a tow" type of setup. Seems simple but it works...well.

Rock shields (plastic) and those type actually bounce stuff back onto the rear of your coach and cause damage.

I have never tried this, so I have no idea if it would do any good.  Do you think that applying sheets of kitchen plastic wrap to the most vulnerable areas would stay in place?
You don't have to believe everything you think.

The car came from the dealer when we got it with some kind of plastic stick on protection on the front. So I am not too worried about it. Worst thing is oil from the bus, which hardly leaks any anyway. I will just take the car to a car wash when we get somewhere.

Put good mud flaps behind your dual wheels on Class A or bus.  I had mud flaps mounted on both front and back wheels of my Jeep, from Orielly and are a little oversize sticking out maybe 2 inches from side walls of car.  Also we pulled my brand new Scamp trailer behind a prevost bus at times while in Alaska, 12, 500 miles.  He had mud flaps on both the rear drive wheels & back wheels.  There was virtually no damage done to my brand new camper which is white.  The roads to and in Alaska are the worst in the WORLD in my opinion.  If the mud flaps work on this road it will work anyplace here on the lower 48.  Mud flaps on the RV should be just off the highway when traveling to assure rocks etc. stay on the ground.  This is just my experience.  Good Luck, we seen many cars, one in particular a BMW being towed behind a class A and the windshield was cracked in many places, all the head lights and indicator lights were smashed.      He did not have ANY mud flaps of any kind on his class A.  The hood was damaged as well as side of car, have no idea where he went but man it was bad.

JC we tow the S-10 white or our green Jeep wrangler all the time and don't use anything. Never had a problem other than a little oil but not much either. We carry Window cleaner and just wash it off if we get any at all. :D

What about spraying some of the front section with 'Plasti-Dip' or equivalent? It can be peeled off without much difficulty and won't damage paint by rubbing.

See you at the 'Q' in January, JC.
