Raised king bed in bedroom (photos)

Heather and I have given our 5 year old interior conversion a makeover already. Crazy, I know but before we start converting the new bus (102C3) we want to set up a floor plan we like in our old bus (MCI 9). This is the experiment bus...Those of you who saw our coach at the Arcadia rally won't recognize it at all now on the inside. Anyway, wife had a brilliant idea and I just spent two days putting it into action. Since we have a 9" roof raise, why not put the head of the bed above the high platform in the rear cap. It would be like a king upper bunk bed (aka cozy) and we'd have huge under bed storage (awesome) and we would also be essentially moving the bed rearward in our bedroom thus freeing up an extra 12 inches of space. Haven't finished yet but here's where we are at. Behind the stacked clothes cabinets is a space large enough for a queen bed and then some. We are storing some things under there right now but eventually we could empty it and make it a kids play area during the day. I can sit on the lower ledge and sit up straight under there and I'm 6 foot tall. I also can easily sit up straight in bed and have nearly 3 inches of clearance for my head. Bedroom feels huge now. Absolutely my favoritist mod in our bus Reno so far.

Hi Scott,

If that arrangement works for you, great. It wouldn't work for my wife because it will be much more difficult to change the bedding, or even make the bed every day. A walk around bed is the only acceptable layout for us. However, our bus is used only by two people and your circumstances will include a growing family. Totally different use. We all make our compromises to meet our specific needs. It makes perfect sense to try different ideas in your current bus and then adapt them as needed for your new bus.

nice idea !
I kinda wish I did a raised roof , but chose the 102 c3 for the higher ceiling . have thought about moving the 2 side rads lower with different fans to do what you did . too much work and why reinvent the wheel .
the biggest regret has been not making the bed room larger .
wow 1 ' bigger in the bed room would be great !
maybe do a raised roof in the bed room only

Sam, it's true making the bed and changing bedding is a royal pain. But we won't give up the king bed so it is what it is. At least the 102C3 we are converting next will be 6" wider and have 2 more inches of headroom than even our 9. Our C3 has an 8" roof raise and was taller to begin with so that will make this even more feasible. Dave, I am convinced that the single best decision we made during conversion was to raise the roof. Taller cabinets, more storage, installing comfortable headroom double bunks for the future kids easy, installing residential shower was easy too. I'll never convert a coach without one now.

Hi Scottt, the bedrooms size is large in my C3, with an open bathroom, where the shower and bathroom sink are open to the bedrrom, bedroom is under 10ft, the openess of the bathroom, feels like 13ft, without drawers yet and the back wall above the engine, about 18" of insulation still in place, will be reconfigured with dressers and closet, tom...

I have a "California King". The 4-inches-less width is good and I'm tall so the extra length is good. I have a 96" bus. I wouldn't call the "walk around" area on each side huge but there's room for a bedside table with drawer underneath on each side. It works for me. Only problem is that I made it too short. I'm going to lift up the bed platform to give extra storage underneath.
The way I did it wouldn't fit everyone, but it's good for me.

we have 14" of open space at the end of the bed ( island queen bed ) then dwrs , cupboards . it would have been nice to have 6" more and could have taken it out of the front living room . when we designed the coach we had my son with us most of the time and he would sleep on the fold out 7' couch .

maybe it's time to build another one ( coach )

On my transit bus (much like a 4104, 4106, MC-5, Crown and Gilligs) I have wheel wells. In the back I raised the Queen bed so that the side of the bed floor was at the correct height to get out of bed over the wheel wells. Then under the bed is a 130gal water tank, 2-10gal water heaters, 2-water pumps, hot and cold water manifold. This also has kept the plumbing above the floor. Good Luck, TomC

Tom, our initial iteration of our bedroom had a glass shower in it. Also open floor plan. We loved it but we have guests stay with us all the time and now with kids along the way it wasn't practical to have the shower in the bedroom anymore so we pulled it and created space in the bathroom for the shower. Moving our bed back above the rear hump allowed us more room in the bedroom which will temporarily have a crib for baby Emma when she arrives in two weeks

Oohranjay, I thought a California king was the largest King you could buy?

Am I missing something? That's gotta be wall to wall in a 96" coach??

Dave, we have a fold out couch too but everyone hates it lol. Really want to install a lift bed up front over the drivers area....for guests

Tomc, the one advantage you have is no freezing pipes if you go somewhere cold

California King- 84" x 72". Regular or East Coast King- 78" x 78" or two extra long twins put together. I've seen some people that are shorter than 72" turn a California King sideways to give an 84" wide bed! Good Luck, TomC

Or... you could use two double bed mattresses in a bunk bed setup. Nice side room for making beds and you won't need a king any more once the kids are here.
