Just read this on Technomadia
QuoteDon & Chris estimate that this took about 5 gallons for the white coats, and about the same for the blue. They estimated the would use 10 gallons of clear. (We haven't had a full run down with them yet to get the specifics.. these were just estimates they gave me off the top of their heads when I asked.)

20 gallons of paint sounds like a LOT of paint for a bus... For anyone who painted their own bus how much did you use?

A gal of base coat covers 200 sf depending on the prep work if that is crappy double it,then the clear all depends on what you are looking for in a finish he may be better off with a 1 step PPG I don't care for it but it's a lot cheaper, sounds a little over on the base coat for good prep work

If you have graphics it will eat the clear coat up to make those no feel to the touch I watched Mike Wilson go through a lot of it on Matts Eagle lol watched my money being sprayed on along with clear

Todd, we sprayed our coach using Ford superwhite automotive paint from our local ppg. It was a single stage paint so instead of BC/CC we just mixed hardener and sprayed away. Used about 4 gallons and I think we laid it on pretty thick. I don't personally recommend single stage only cause it doesn't get glossy. But it is easy and the paint is really really durable. I mean really durable.

I usually spray SPI single stage ( black and white ) and the old time hot rod guys swear it has a clear coat on it. http://www.southernpolyurethanes.com/ I was just concerned they were going to get charged for 20 gallons of paint ;)

Our coach has clear over the base. It gets an incredible amount of glare in my rearview mirrors from car headlamps behind you, esp. at night in the rain.

The clear coat gets eaten by the sun.  We have parked our bus the same place for 10 years and the southern exposure side has sun damage BUT the northern side does not show the same damage. Even with touch up and spot repairs the dark colors burn up the clear coat.

Just my experience.  White paint seems to hold up much better but single stage paint would be my preference.

Expensive, but Imron looks good and holds up well.

Not base coat clear-coat.  I shoot centari, then a urethane clear-coat . Don't like the life of urethane single stage. Imron is just the original single stage urethane. rdw
