Does anyone have a reputable, or better yet willing insurance company in Quebec that insures coaches?

   First place, make sure you are insuring a motorhome if that is what it actually is and not a bus that you have intentions of converting. Don't say it is a bus. Many companies will tell you they don't do commercial vehicles.

We are in Ontario and have a policy with ING insurance. It is a motorhome. Do not ever say it is a bus. They might keep asking but always say motorhome. We pay $450 a year for basic insurance. Hope this helps. Raymond

I am with Aviva insurance.  They know it used to be a bus and was converted.  I had them in both Ontario and now in Nova Scotia.

I have Aviva insurance through wayfarer as well . after 10 years with them the price has gone up about 2-3 % per year it must be a cost of living thing or just a way to gouge me out of my money or maybe my r/v is worth more ? ya right

For those of you who think you have insurance because you have always referred to your converted bus as a motorhome I sincerely hope you never learn otherwise.  Just because your agent has always cashed your cheque DOES NOT mean that you actually will have insurance when you really need it.  Insurance is a mug's game - the only way to play it is 110% straight up.  Document everything with your broker.  Make certain that he understands exactly what it is that you are insuring and make sure that you have proof that he understands.  Anything less than that means that you are set up for a horrendous disappointment if you ever actually need the insurance that you are paying for.  You may go a lifetime without ever needing the insurance and therefore never know that you don't really have insurance but why would you pay for something that you don't know for sure you actually have?

This is especially true if your insurance company is thinking "Motor Home" which means the local Camping World is where they expect body damaged to be repaired, while you are thinking you hope there is a place that can actually repair a bus and find the needed parts.

Your insurance is probably going to figure out you have a bus one way or another.  Unless your bus is really old they can figure out a lot from the VIN number.  My insurance company knows I have a converted bus.

The cost of repairs due to a collision are going to be pretty high on any bus unless you do it yourself.  A lot of buses would just be totaled by the insurance company due to repairs being more than the current value of the bus.  There used to be a shop in town that did body repairs specifically on buses.  They had a nearly new transit bus that had front end damage from rear ending a vehicle.  They told me the repair was over $200,000, but still worth repairing due to the cost of a new bus.

This is why my bus only has liability insurance. I cannot trust an insurance company to help me if my bus is damaged. I take the risk myself. The bus is really just a toy, not something I need to carry on. If I drive it off the road one day, or it gets stolen, or burnt, I can decide then whether to fix it or replace it, or not. I don't like to pay premiums every year, when I know the slimey insurance company will find all the excuses to not pay the claim.

when I converted mine and to get insurance I had to have it professionally appraised and had to have a tssa gas label on my propane set up .

when my insurance called me to tell me what the appraisal was worth I almost fell over when they told me what it was worth . I only have it insured for less then 1/2 and we have a agreed upon price that I pay for but have full coverage .

now if I ever need it who knows what excuse they will try and come up with .but the value for full lose is in my policy

Dave I think that is important to do, get them to put it in writing or it isn't worth anything.

Even in writing watch the "got you" in fine print all you guys with Progressive to read every line in the policy.


We have friends that had a small electrical fire in their bus, he is in a battle with the adjuster for Progressive as the adjuster refused the claim because his bus does not have the RVIA plaque with a number

I believe Progressive will lose this battle but you never know
