It took me a while to find it again, but here is what I am thinking, only with slightly taller front tires, and a wider track.   

     That would be one MAJOR everyday, knock-around truck.  I like it!

Your VW is fine - people tow Jeep Cherokees, Chevy Tahoes, Ford F-150 pickups and even Hummer H2s behind their Class As.

     Yes, "Edmonds" shows the '03 TDI as 2898 pounds, curb weight.  Since mine is a wagon, I'm guessing about 3100.  That's not a lot, but I'm a "if it should be light, it should be REALLY light" kinda guy.  Guy who parks his bus next to mine in the storage lot recently found a 1800 pound Suzuki Tracker on sale for $800 (runs great and body is in good shape, is a "mini" wagon but a lot of grocery hauling space inside).  But I kinda envy the 1300 pounds.
