I will be heading from St. Louis Missouri to Canyon Lake Texas, September or October for a wedding, and I am looking for places to stay. I would prefer to boonedock, but am open to reasonably priced campgrounds  I would love to meet some of you along the way or while there. I am planning on staying somewhere in the Gulf  for the winter. I was thinking about Port Aransas. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated for both places.

Plenty of Corps of Engineers parks on Canyon Lake some don't have all services and are cheap to stay in ,when you say Canyon Lake where ? that is fairly large lake on the Guadalupe and some parks are closed starting in Oct till Mar

We stayed at a park there about 3 years ago, but can't remember where.  Seems it was off TX hwy 306.  I recommend you get the "Allstays" app for your phone.  We payed $5 for it and found it indispensable when we made our New England trip in 2012.  It more than paid for itself with the 1st campground we stayed in.  It has every type of camping facility available and is mainly updated by peers.  It even has Walmart parking allowed features.

You might be able to check out their website on your computer to see how it works.

If you plan on staying in Port Aransas, Portland, Rockport-Fulton or Corpus Christi, you may be out of luck. You need to make reservations early. We found that out when we rolled into Rockport-Fulton in Nov 2009 and started looking (BTW, you can stay several nights at the Rockport Wal-Mart with no problems). We finally found a place to stay but the places that would allow us in (we were vending food at the time) said they were booked for the winter. We finally ended up on Flour Bluff in Corpus Christi. Flour Bluff is the where the Military base is at (that side of the place is a baaaad neighbourhood) then just the one bridge to cross over to Padre Island but much less winds. We were there for 6 months.
