No need to pull the pan on a 8v71 just pull the air box covers,he can tell what side and which cylinder the leak is coming from not much is going to show at pan on a 8v71 as for water leaks the air box catches it first

Tell your buddy to take a oil sample into the Cat, Cummins or Detroit dealer..   You will know your answer with regards to the Glycol level.   That will tell you the extent of the repair bill >> bearings..
