I am leaving Pismo Beach on Monday heading to Phoenix. Any suggestions on the best route to take.I am thinking about taking 118 south of Ventura to the 210 to 30 then 30 to the 10.I should be in the L.A. area about noon.

If it were me I think I would stick with the 210 all the way to where it connects with the 10 directly.  The further you get from LA before getting on the 10 the better in my opinion.  Maybe things have changed, but when I lived out there I-10 in the metro at noon, or either rush hour, could be miserable enough in a car.

The route you're going to take is exactly the one I would also. Try to do it on Sunday-least amount of traffic. Be sure to consult sigalert.com for traffic up dates. Monday mid day will be the next least traffic day. Good Luck, TomC

Longer (1 Hr.) but no LA mess:  S-101 to E-166 to E-58 to E-40 to S-95(AZ-LHC) to E-10 to Phoenix all good roads!

Thanks for all the input.I went with the way I posted. That was the best way I found so far if your going through L.A. The traffic was heavy but no wrecks.I was surprised how fast the semis go.Its posted at 55 but 65 was about the speed most was going.I was towing but always drove over 60mph. I went through at least four radar zones and the fasted speed was 64mph according to my gps with no problems.

Hi Don, glad you got thru LA intact and alive! This summer was going west on the 210 not far from the 605, towing the jeep, when an 18 wheeler wanted to pass a slow lane car by coming into the middle lane in front of me, we were all doing somewhere in the 70 mph range, just after getting in front of me all the back right tires blew on the trailer, and we were all in close proximity, an entire tire carcass came flying out the back hitting the road just under the bus, tumbled under the length of the bus, came out on the left side of the jeep, hitting under the front and back tires.
There wasn't enough time to slow down as he passed, or enough room to get in another lane, traffic was heavy. Broke off the sewer line in the bus and did $1100 damage to the jeep. No lesson to be learned here, we all know what would have been ideal to do, hard braking would have caused a bigger accident I feel, and was thinking if a tire blew I should keep speed/momentum. Its just the tight quarters on some LA fwys and the speed at some times of day, as you mentioned, causes one to take other routes, thanks Bruce, is that a mountain rd.? lvmci...

Two lane with passing areas, One long pull on the Bakersfield side 35/40 mph in the 4104, 55+ in the MCI, some  curvy/windy road areas too, average 55 mph over all. Better day time road then night, used by Semi as a regular truck route too. Hope this helps.  Also you can used 46 out of Paso Robles 30 miles longer but better MPG on over all fuel bill.  Bruce
