Grip Tires on Tag Axle

The rib tires on my MC-7 tag are starting to crack around the bead and between tread......not terrible yet, but the tires are approaching 10 years old..

I have a mis-matched pair of 12R-22.5 grip tires that are about 6-7 years old that are just aging away in my shed. All my other tires are 12R22.5 matching set.

Any reason to NOT put them on the tag?

They'll just get scrubbed down, running on the tag. Throw about 8-10 ounces of antifreeze in them for balancing and run them on the tag till they're done.

The risk of running old tires is that if one blows, it could do a lot of damage to the body around the wheel well, and to the air bag and air lines, and other stuff. And you know how hard it would be to find replacement body panels.

Run em.  I've got 4 grippers on my bus and there is no difference other than they run a little noisier than the ribbed tires.  Heck, at the price of tires these days a person can't afford to  let a tire sit and rot.

We once had a Freightliner come in with traction tires on the steer axle. Out of curiosity, I took it for a drive and quite frankly couldn't feel any difference in the way it steered. On a tag axle-it doesn't make much difference what you run as long as the tire can take the weight requirements. Good Luck, TomC
