I was asked this question. Someone is looking at a 4104 and asked if the is an automatic transmission that matches up and keeping the same driveline and everything else.

Thanks in advance.

The VS-2 might,  but not sure, I know nothing about them.  V730 won't work.

Jon -

I know of one 4104 with a VS automatic in it.

Owner HATES the automatic! Says it's OK around town, or driving on the flats, but is incredibly gutless and slow trying to climb any kind of grade, plus it can and will quickly overheat in those situations.

Huggy Bear has an automatic in it, but it's a V-730 mated to a 6V92TA and a 4106 rear axle - none of which were OEM.

If this individual really wants an automatic, encourage him to look for a coach already equipped with one.  Makes no sense to do that change-over in today's market.

Or bite the bullet and learn how to drive the 4104 properly.

I've had a 4104 for about a year and a half.  Gutted and in restoration phase so I haven't had a whole lot of time behind the wheel.  Shifting without using the clutch is the way to go.  no grinding gears with a little practice.  If you miss a gear, simply rev it up and drop it in.

I drove our 4104 for 16 years and over 150,000 miles, no problems shifting.  Once you get it down it is like "slicing butter".  Only problem I didn't like was the "high" geared reverse and relatively high 1st gear, and lack of an overdrive.

I am looking at a 4104 with a 671 turbo/ v730. I haven't driven it yet so I don't know about the performance. The bus is a professional conversion. I think you have to swap the rear to a 4106 rear.

Scott would you mind posting a picture of the engine in the one you are looking at.
