If you have an early GM (4104 or older) with the hand brake assembly still operational, here's a tip.  If your shield assembly that goes over the parking brake drum is missing (how many know that there ever was one there?) I highly recommend that you install one.  Most have long since been discarded but there is a good reason GM put them on there.  Nuts, bolts, rocks, whatever can get between the shoes and drum and really cause a problem (don't ask me how I know) and even start a fire.  Here are before and after pictures of one I installed on my Silverside, GM part no. 2229479.  Good luck finding one, but it's possible to make one if you're handy.  HTH
