Can a 8-71 get too much air??

Best to use ATF when looking for a air leak just watch the exhaust it will tell you when using ATF watch the smoke that's all I have ever used fwiw

Here are pictures of that lip on the leading edge of the rad air intake on my 5C. It sticks out almost an inch.
