Cary and Don

We have a cruise air that is giving us trouble.  The compressor unit will not shut off.  The fan unit is working right.  The OFF button will not shut the compressor off though.  Any ideas as to where the problem might be?

Don, when you say off button does the units have touch pad controls or the 2 analog control knobs ?

It sounds to me might be as simple as a stuck relay.  I would advise killing the power to the unit.  Wait 5 minutes and then turn the circuit breaker back on.  If the compressor comes on again-check the compressor relay.  Good Luck, TomC

It has a touch pad.

We tried cutting power to it and then starting it again.  It would come back on as soon as the power came back on.  The touch panel says it's off, but the compressor is still running.

We were thinking a stuck relay.  Hope somebody knows where it is.  The little bit the manual says leads us to think it is in the compressor unit.  This does have one of those control boxes that the touch panel, compressor, blower, and thermostat plugs into.

 I hope it is a relay for you Don but I doubt it sounds like the board to me, I switched mine over to the touch pad and went back to knobs after a couple of years lol

Don, I scanned a copy of the CruiseAir manual and posted it on PhotoBucket a while ago but I went and looked today and found that it hadn't posted/was dropped/etc.   So I redid it; here's a link to the copies.

Great try Bruce that manual is for the rotary controls and I cannot find the service manual on line that goes with the installation manual for the digital controls 

I am guessing they want you to pay for it now great units when Taylor owned it gone to pot since Dometic took ownership and moved it to Mexico

We had the installation and operation manuals.  No help at all.  Thanks for trying.

The push button panel "appears" to be functioning correctly.  The lights come on the way they should.  The fan unit works the way it should.  But it isn't getting cold and the basement unit is still running after turning it off.

Hoping the refrigeration expert comes up with an easy fix.

They have a sight glass can you see freon movement inside the glass while the compressor is running they have a pressure   solenoid check the voltage if running and you see no freon movement

I have the repair manual at Mohave when I get back I'll send you copy they are a simple unit once you figure out all the switches and valves fwiw they are touchy about the freon charge

It was really weird.   We had it running and cooling on the generator on our test drive for the brakes.  Turned it off. Went back to shore power and the compressor came on.  Tried to turn it off at the panel.  Nothing.  It ran just fine on shore power before.  Finally turned it off with the breaker.

We keep thinking it is something simple.  The manual would be a great help.

Hi Don & Cary,

If the condencer fan motor is running along with the compressor then it will be 1 of two things.

Less likely, since the SMX panel displays it being off, chances are the SMX panel is working properly!

More likely, the contactor relay [at the condencer electrical connection panel] has welded it's self

in the closed position! Since your system runs on the SMX system, you will find that relay connected

to a curcuit board and the board may have to be replaced. I would try tapping on the relay first to

see if it releases..

We called the cruise air people.  They actually had a service person that was nice enough to tell us that is was probably that relay.  He said we should check it before buying a new one.  Then came the bad news.  They want $216 for that relay!!  And it's in Virginia. We are hoping that once we get it out we can cross match it to something a little more reasonable. It's just a four post sealed relay.

I hope that you keep digging. Sometimes, it's possible to replace with a better product. The original failed, so I would expect that the ratings for that relay are marginal.

Good luck tracking something down.
