Greetings,

If you have put in a request to join this forum - there has been a problem with one of our main anti-spam engines which has flooded our queue of pending new members.  This problem was fixed late last night so over the next few days you should receive an email with instructions on how to proceed.

I do apologize for the long delay.  We do strive to keep this forum a safe - spam free environment and every once in a while that may cause some inconvenience.

If you just can't wait for that process, please email me directly:  plyons at hotmail.com

Best Regards, Phil

Something is going on out there in computerland.  Over the past week or so, both mine and my wife's email spam levels have quadrupled.

Mine was too. I never get spam but this last week i was getting at least 5 a day. They email ady they use was my BNO email but it said to-Friend. When I clicked friend it showed my BNO email ady.
They also look similar to each other and it said spam next too the ad. I opted out of them all and they finally stopped today or so far.

I'm sorry but I can't resist - yet another reason not to post over there.

Interesting.

I thank our hosts in advance for this dalliance.

Nobody's e-mail address is supposed to be visible to another member on BNO.

If e-mailing another member, the machinery is supposed to send an e-mail to the intended recipient without disclosing the destination e-mail to the sender. The sending member is also identified.

This is an upgrade in the newer version of SMF, in order to protect against just that sort of thing.

Please elaborate via PM, e-mail, or over at BNO, as to what it is you got, from which "member" via what method.

My e-mail is in my profile.

Both boards are big believers in keeping this hobby safe from those who might do harm to any of us.

In my earlier post, I wasn't saying that spam came from the boards, only that I've seen a huge increase in the past couple of weeks.

I think that ours is coming from several different places based on the content which seems to be based on comments or searches that we have done. The thing that these people don't realize is that even if i was interested in what they are promoting i will not be dealing with them.

Both the boards use the same software it is a free software security and spam protection is not one it greatest features it is only as good as the administrators

Everybody tells me your screen name should never be part of your email address that the spammers and hackers have easy picking then

Well, actually, both boards use software from the same company, SMF, Simple Machine Forums.

However, they are not the same software.

It would be good for the hobby if the finance department here would pony up and purchase the later version.

That decision is out of the hands of our regular helpers, Phil and company.

And, yes, administration and moderation are key to a happy busnut experience.

The tag at the bottom of both sites has the version number of the software.

BNO is using:  SMF 2.0.2 | SMF

BCM is using :   SMF 1.1.16 | SMF

Hidden e-mail addresses is just one visible improvement in 2.0.x
Lots of the weaknesses in 1.1.x were reportedly repaired.

FWIW, for those who may still be using it, SMF 1.0.x, the original of the series, stops being supported at the end of this year, having been going since 2004.

And the registration process has also been turned to manual control at BNO, as it was planned to become when conditions warranted. As you know, that becomes a hobby in itself to keep up with...
