     The batteries have to be pretty good but has he got low compression or something?

Not sure. My Detroit starts and runs so much better even in cold temps. With a teeny shot of ether :-/

If you slow time a cummins to push more boost & fuel, they get hard to start.  A high horsepower cummins typically has 14:1 compression.  Fast timed motors start good and are responsive, but the pyro gets real high real quick on the long grades.  It's a tradeoff.  Detroits start better, but I'm still happy I've got a Cummins.

One of the many reasons I hated Cummins until recently when they changed to common rail electronic fuel injection-and all that cold weather starting went away.  Good luck, TomC

I would love a Cummins. Watched that video several times I enjoyed it so much...but definitely would hate how many starters I went through in one winter

Just plug it in for an hour or two before you start it.  Mine starts off one car battery if I've plugged it in for an hour.

Both of my Cummins powered buses start in the cold without ether. One with an L10 and the other an M11. And it does get cold where I live.

The 855 Cummins was a nightmare to start in cold weather great engine but they smoked like crazy even in July on start up because of the way the pistons and liners were designed kinda like a egg then when they warmed up the piston rounded out and compression went up then they stopped smoking lol 

I know a guy that always uses his AquaHot to pre heat his 855 even when it will start as he doesn't like the smoke
