As some of you know I recently finished the install of a series 60 and an allison 6 speed electronic transmission. Everything works great except for a few things.

1. I can't read the rngine functions thru. the tranny harness with my silverleaf??\

2. I rewired the diag. connector straight to the engine. I noe have engine functions but not tranny.

3. I have no road speed from the engine. The engine was programed to read from the trans.     tailshaft. Without this the cruise or jakes will not work.

I found the program printout and realized the input could be changed from tailshaft to J1939. Sounded simple so I called the local Detroit shop. Yes we can do that!! Labor rate is $ 100.00 hour but it won't take more than half an hour. I make an appointment for 9 a.m. today. I arrive at quater till, and wait app. 1 hour. They sent a fella out to the bus with his laptop. I have my laptop plugged into the diag. connector. Silverleaf is working fine. Unplug mine and plug his in. NOTHING. He gets another one. Same thing. Pull bus into bay and he goes under and connects straight to the ecm. A few minutes later he says ready to go. I go to pay. Bill $100.00. I said I thought you said half an hour tops??? Oh, it goes half hours after the first hour minimun charge. Not happy but if I have it fixed im ok. Drive 1/2 mile. Same results. Check engine light, no road speed!!!! I pull over and call. Yes we can fix it, but it will take a couple or three hours!!! Pissed off hang up!! Call Allison. Sir you will need to contact your eng mfgr. We cant tell you why they wont communicate. I said they do. Everything shifts aperfectly. As I said sir you >>>>> Call Detroit. Sir we are the engine mfgr. You would need to contact the trans. mfgr for that info. Remember when you were little and wanted to spend the night with a friend. Dad would say aks mom, mom would say ask daduntil it got to late to go anyway. GUESS WHAT HAPPENED TODAY!!!!!!

And people wonder why I wanted an all mechanical engine. . . .  ;D

I hope you can get this issue resolved soon tho . . .

I liked it better when my transmission communicated with the engine through the clutch.

To err is human, but to screw up things real good you need a computer. Extra credit if it runs Windoze.
Linux, when Windoze just will not measure up.

The only thing this affects is the ability to use the cruise, and jakes. The engine needs speed input for goth. It has been like this from day one. I have been using my GPS for a speedo. I was looking forward to both, but guess it is up to me as DD and Allison are either clueless, or just don't GAD!! I do admit I am a gadget guy. I like the bells and whistles and I refuse to give up!! Its not like this combo is new to either of them!!!LOL

What Generation tranny is this? I had problems with Cummins and Allison also. Turned out to be an Allison problem. My speedo would not work with a Gen 4 tranny without being sent back for work also. Have you tried Ted Keating yet with your Allison problems? He helped me a lot.   Tom Y

I got the trans harness from Ted. I am going to call him monday for his input. My allison is a wtec III. It communicates via j1939 with the engine. Seems that is working perfect.

  Boy, is that an understatement.

I started playing with engine computers in the mid 70's, trying to keep cars like Saabs, and Volvo's, and VW's, and other stuff like that running. Seemed each new model or model year the stuff changed, got more advanced (complex), and no matter how much I learned, I was always behind the curve.

Then I started seeing guys at dealerships with extensive factory training take computers out of known good running cars of the same make and model owned by other customers, to use as test mules. They all said the same crap, the factory test equipment wasnt working 100%. They didnt know anymore than I did, less in fact, because I knew how to back read the injection harness to determine a malfunction.

That was when I fully knew computers were going to rule US, rather than the other way round. Give me a simple carb or injection pump anyday. May not be the most efficient in terms of fuel economy by todays standards, but youll be less likely to find yourself sitting along the road because of them.
