Greetings,

I'm really new to the bus/coach conversion world....
So hello and thank you for including me in your magazine/forum everyone.... I had a question, I recently purchased a 1965 THM GMC 5303 (fishbowl)!!!!!!  It was professionally converted into a R/V in the 90's but still runs the 6v71 detroit diesel with the 4spd manual transmission.  I bought the coach and drove it about 30 minutes home, it smoked a bit, which from what I understand is pretty normal for these motors, but I would like to know what to check for other than filters etc.

My question is, I would like to buy a repair manual just to have around... but the only one's that I can find are for 1960 or 1961 6v71's.... is there any difference in the 1960 and the 1965???

Thank you to everyone ahead of time!!!

Pics to come!

You should look for a V71 Highway Vehicle Service Manual, it covers all the models and all the years, so get a later one and you will be able to see updates that may have been applied to your engine.  Mine is 1982.  so don't limit your search to just thee 6V71, the same manual covers the 1, 8 and 12V 71.

Welcome, participate, enjoy!

You might clear up your smoke if previous owner (po) used something other than straight 40 wt oil in your engine.  must be rated for 2 stroke engine use.   welcome to the madness.   Bob

worked for me guess myth have healing powers.   Bob  What I should have said is I have found less oil consumption and leaks when using the proper oil as-per Detroit Guidelines. Have observed less smoke out of tail pipe as a result .

I've read all over the net that if you don't run 40wt oil it can have adverse effects on a 6v71......and I found a gallon of 15w40 in the coach........

This is a bit of a newb question....but how much oil does this old girl hold? Im gonna go ahead and change out my filters.....fuel and oil just so I know where I am at from the beginning.

Secondly.........is there a way to find out the history on my TDM5303.... it doesn't seem that a lot of these old buses came with a 4spd on the floor...curious to know where it spent most of its service time......previous owner said from California..... but was curious to know if that's possible to find out?

I have to agree with Bob.  PO ran 15/40 in mine and I couldn't wait to change it.  I am running 40wt and have experienced much less white smoke on startup. On 15/40 after fast idle airing up etc...it still smoked a good 5 miles.  Now it is smoking less than 1/2 a mile after sitting for a few weeks.  On back to back day travels it clears up moslty with fast idle. Engine just seems to rum smoother.

Just my take on it....

Take care and good luck.  James
