OK here we go . Looks like we have to change our User name, as we just picked up our new Bus. A low mile (150k) one Owner 95 MCI 102D3. Detroit 60 Engine and B500 with retarder function.

Now my Questions:
What Power steering fluid to use ??

And for the b500 is there only trans synd   or anything better??

Still a lot to learn on this one, as its for sure no Neoplan :)
And then the fun begins taking out the seats and restroom !!!

The hockey team's D3 I used to look after was a '95 with S60. Pre EGR. Really strong engine.

I seem to recall putting 10w40 motor oil in the power steering. Don't hold me to it though.

Our bus had a manual, 3 big thick binders. It had everything in it. Parts and service covering everything about the coach. Did you get that with the bus? You really need that manual.

Busted Knuckle

Call MCI and see what they recommend on the steering fluid.
Our '05 Setra's use Transynd in both the trans and steering!

Also Mobil makes an equivalent to Transynd! (just as good cheaper!)

Great coach!

A word of warning, you need to be sure of your transmission temp gauge accuracy, and you need to pay attention to it during heavy retarder use.

Some of the D coaches weren't the best for keeping the tranny cool. If an auxiliary cooler has not been added, that would be high on my list to retrofit.

In the meantime, don't be sailing down the mountain in top gear, with low revs, with the retarder doing all the work and no coolant flow or rad fans spinning hard to keep it cool.
Follow the same strategies as without, get down a gear or two, keep the revs high.

Transynd is a TES-295 spec fluid as certified by Allison.  There are about a half dozen TES-295 fluids approved by Allison.

When I last checked on fluid prices some time ago Transynd ended up being the cheapest, but recently I checked again and found a Freightliner dealer with Mobil Delvac synthetic ATF for the lowest price.  The Delvac synthetic ATF says Approved for Allison transmissions all over it.
