WD-40  is Water Displacement-40 is not really intended for this use but does marginally work.?  I use PB Blaster and have good luck/ with some residual lubrication.    Other solution Please!!   Bob

I use penetrating oil (3in1 silicone penetrating is my present favorite) to loosen and various silicone lubes (whatever is on sale ) to lube.  It really depends on the situation, in different areas different lubes, I know it is tempting to want to use spray on lube all the time, but the actual film of lube is pretty thin....I had some motor bike chain lube in a can that was great but it cost too much to replace.

WD-40 is mostly a solvent, so it is good at cleaning, washing away dirt, etc.  It does have good lubrication properties while it's wet but it evaporates quickly and the solvent dries things out, making the problem worse in the long term.  The solution depends on the problem - just cleaning away sticky old lubricant, I use brake cleaner spray and then the correct lube for the situation.  Seized up parts with rust, I disassemble, clean, and rebuild.  I tend to use a lot of oil (just engine oil), white grease, wheel bearing grease, anti-seize, depending on the problem.  I have recently seen spray silicone work well on different things, but I don't use it myself.

I Still like LPS products.  LPS-1, LPS-2, and for long lasting protection LPS-3.

I second Steve's last post.

Aerokroil which is made by Kano.   Is a rust eating penetrant.  On the products label they even recomend it for cleaning guns and rifle barrels.

I heard a mechanic once say he used what he called bee wax. He would heat the part up and keep applying the bees wax.  I've never did it. I was just told about it.

Candel wax works well too. If you have a vertical bolt and add heat to it hold a candle on it and it will suck in like solder to a joint. When it cools it will come right off.

I have to give thumbs up to the Kroil too! Back when dad worked @ General Tire they bought the stuff in 55 gallon drums and he used to keep me supplied in it! I loved that stuff, and need to find me a new source for it.

Howes, the people that make fuel treatment has the best penetrating oil I've seen. It's available at many truck stops.
