The tire thread got me to thinking  :o ::) So many of us buy these expensive tires and then the bus sits for so long. Could something be worked out where a few people who live close to eachother go in on a good set of new tires or tires with wheels and they just use old funky tires for parking or around town but use the good new set when they go on a road trip? What do you think about doing something like that to try to get more mileage out of a good set?

After changing 4 wheels around, I would have to say its not something I would care to do very often. And even with 40 acres, I really dont really want 6 wheels and tires laying around. And really, whats not having them on going to save them from?

Put the best tires on it you can afford, wash them and schmear tire protectant on them (both sides, spray the tread too), and cover them when your parked. The Sun is the greatest tire killer, followed by Ozone. Protecting them with chemicals can ward off the Ozone damage, and covering them keeps the sun off.

Just sayin, from what I have read, the tires need to be used or they wear out faster.... sounds silly huh? But they say that the tires need to get hot and have the chemicals move around inside the tires or they go bad quicker.... That's what I was talking about saving them from.

Actually maybe my post was misunderstood...? The good set would be on someone's bus all the time, but yes rotated often with other nuts which means taking tires and/or wheels on and off. Extra work for the nut for sure! Just a thought because I have a new set that I bought last summer that is just sitting while I demolish my bus right now, and summer is coming up and so are the price of tires....... I thought maybe someone could use them for a road trip and I could use junky ones for awhile......

It sounds like a good idea on paper, but how would it work in the real world?  You would have to be lucky enough to have several busnuts nearby who have the same tire size and don't want to travel at the same time.  What happens if one busnut damages a tire and the next busnut has a blowout?  Who pays for a new tire?

You're smart and I am sure you could work it out if you had enough time and a lawyer to help.

I don't know if I would do it.  I don't have the tools to change a bus wheel.

The best solution is to buy the tires and use them for 4 or 5 years, and sell them to a trucker who will wear them out in 2 or 3 years, You could probably sell them for half their cost and both of you could make out O.K.

Good Luck,

When I needed tires I got them from a company that replaced tires on buses because DOT said they had to

They had to install matched sets complete so I got the take offs and made them match as much as possible

The tires had good dates and good tread --- still I won't wear them out but it was MUCH cheaper than new ( I did put new on the steers that match the others )

Just the way that worked for me

YMMV

Will most truckers want tires that old?  My tires just turned five years old this month and I was planning to keep them another year at least.  It might be worth replacing now if I can sell the old ones for a good price.

How you guys find outfits that get rid of decent tires?  Call around?

Truckers are in the same boat we are. They are tired of paying top dollar for things. A four year old tire still has a lot of life left. If the tire was on a bus that only put a few thousand miles on it, they might be willing to pay half price to wear it out with mileage. Most bus tires will rot before they wear out.

I dont know how this would work exactly.... Im just throwing it out there for open discussion. Personally I think the nearest bus nut to me is a couple hundred miles away, but for some of you others who share the same town it could be viable. Obviously trips couldnt be made at the same time. As for if one goes out on the road? Depending on the number of people who wanted to enter into the coop, maybe everyone could pitch in $10.00 a month or whatever it would work out to so there would be a fund for replacement tires....... I dont know, maybe it wouldnt work out at all. But on the other hand, maybe renting tires would be good for us.......

Most tire shops in the OKC area will not take a tire over four years old, I just got rid of some that were seven and they didn't want them, and if fact, wanted me to pay a disposal fee on them ($29 per tire).  I sold them to a guy with a dumptruck and he was happy to get them for the price.

It seems to me the clist and e store would be the place to sell them.
