I am having a hard time finding info on Jake Brake installation cost. Does anyone know what it would cost to get a Jake break installed on a 4106 / 8v71 / Alison V730? Thanks.

Mike -

Hopefully, Don Fairchild will pop in here and give you a ballpark guesstimate on the Jake Brake installation.  Much easier on the V-drive GM that having to crawl completely into the engine compartment on the others.

Once installed, you can give your brakes a break!

Hi Mike,

2 1/2 years ago it cost me $550 in labor to have my Jakes installed at Keith Crawfords.

It was a good solid day of labor and an hour the next morning to get them tuned..

I think well worth the labor!

Good Luck

Thanks RJ & Nick,

Nick, was that on a GM coach? $550 labor is a great price. It will be well worth it for me as well. I can't imagine mountaineering without them.

I saw some Jake brakes on Ebay for $200, does that sound about right?

Mike,

Nick's bus is an MCI with "T drive"; different than the 4106 with "V drive". The V drives are easier to work on so theoretically that should translate to cheaper labor charges, but may not in the real world.

$200 for a set of Jakes is cheap. Is this what you saw:  http://tinyurl.com/Jakes1

If so, this auction is for only one actuator; you need something along the lines of this:   http://tinyurl.com/Jakes2

Used Jake setups generally retail for about $100/cylinder, though sometimes can be had for cheaper

There's a set  on the BNO board, but they're 24 volt. Gives you an idea of what's out there, though.

Easy to convert to 12v, just change the solenoids. I don't recall them being very expensive, and one solenoid does two cylinders, so whatever the cost of 4 is.

Bob,

Yes, that was what I saw. If it's $800 for the hardware and $600 for the labor then it's very affordable and very worth it. Thanks for the info.

Be careful buying a used Jake set parts are pricey like the wiring harness 145 bucks, solenoids 100 bucks each, buffer switch 200 to 600 bucks throw in a rebuild kit and machine work on the bridges it will not be cheap best to buy a rebuild from folks like Don you just never seem to get all the parts.
You Ebay shoppers could probably buy parts a little cheaper but I don't do Ebay I don't have the time and like to hold things in my hands before I part with cash lol

good luck

Ouch, two years ago I was quoted $40, that must have been with my mechanics discount.
