? for you guys how do you make a Pro Link read a M 11 plus engine I have the pin adapter but not having any luck with retrieving any info like to know how as I don't have the Cummins software with me thanks

Hi Clifford.  I assume you have the generic HD diesel card.  That should read any engine and many transmissions.  You only need the specific card to do re-programming.

You know all of the following, but I am going to document this for others.

The M11 should have the 6 pin data port.  That port will have 4 wires.  Two are power and two are data.

Some of the data ports are always live and  some have to have the "ignition switch" on.  I assume you are attempting to read with the switch on.

If the ProLink powers up, then you are picking up the power.  If it powers up, but does not display data, then there may be an issue with data wiring.  You can check the data wiring with a voltmeter.  There should be between 3.5 and 4.2 volts between the 12 volt ground and the Data + pin and about 1 volt between the 12V ground and the Data - pin.

I will try to get a JPG posted later today that shows the pin location and the voltages.

This is weird usually I am usually ASKING questions of Clifford :D :o

I have the 2 pin adapter with the MPC card (600 bucks) the engines are still in the trucks and I get power ok, today I'll take my Cummins software and check it out I can get all 3 engines at a bargain and was just trying to find a good one for Gilbert's Eagle post the JPG it will help me as you know I don't give up easy lol thanks

Hi Clifford.  Not sure what you mean by the two pin adapter.  The only ones I am familiar with is the SAE 6 and 9 pin adapters.  I have seen folks make custom adapters (i.e. DDEC II).

If the engines are in the trucks, you should be able to use the 6 or 9 pin adapters.

Bob should be in the area and has my ProLink with the standard adapters.

In any case, the JPG below should show the ports and the voltages.  I had to convert a PDF to a JPG and then re-size it to post.  Lost a lot of clarity.  If the clarity is too compromised, I will post the PDF on my website.

Jim, I have the MPI 401013 two pin adapter it is made for the Cummins engine so they tell me came with MPC for a little extra lol btw it is a Prolink Plus if that makes any difference

I don't have a clue of what you folks are talking about. I'm replying out of appriciation for all that Clifford does for so many people. If I had what he needed it would be on the way.

Hey Cliford, I used Jim,s ProLind on a Volvo, the connection was a round plug under the dash right of the stering column. Diden't have a clue as to what I was doing but with a little coaching from Jiim I was able to get all the info.

Good luck and thanks for the help, hope you find me a good one lol.

Jim, I checked with my buddy at Southern Plains he told depending on the version of a Cummins ECM the ProLink will not give a accurate reading or sometimes no reading you need the QC 5200 by Cummins to read it seems like Cummins don't like the Prolink and do all they can to prevent ProLink access  to their software.
Laptop time I guess for me

Clifford, I looked at the 401013 and see that it is an adapter cable to the ProLink module.  I have no idea what it hooks to.  Do you have the 6 Pin data port adapter?  If so, it should be able to hook it up to the data port in the cab of the truck to get the data you need, assuming they have not disturbed the wiring.

I really have to question the statements by Southern Plains. There are a lot of SilverLeaf VMSpc units out there hooked to an ISM/M11 data port, and they get wonderful data with no problem.  I traveled with Bill Pratt this summer on the way to the Eagle rally and he got all the same information I got.

I bring up the SilverLeaf because it uses the same technology as the ProLink (reads the data from the J1708 protocol and displays it).  In the case of the ProLink, it is the raw data that it displays.  In the case of the SilverLeaf, it does some calculations of the raw data to display other information.  If the ISM/M11 had problems reporting data, the SilverLeaf would not work.

As Bob mentioned, he and I "walked" through the ProLink data when he hooked it up to a M11/ISM engine in a truck he was looking at.  He got all of the data with no problem.

The early M11 was CELECT technology and did not have the J1939 protocol.  The later Celect Plus engines had the J1939 protocol.  Find out if the engine you are checking out is Celect or Celect plus.

I spoke with Sonnie Gray he is having a problem with the ISX he has in his shop the Prolink won't read it he had to get the guys from a local Cummins place with a laptop software to read it how come no module is made for the Cummins by ProLink I check everywhere trying to buy and all I could come up with was generic and it maybe bad ? any way to test without sending it back
The 2 pin hooks up just like on the Dodge Cummins
I really don't know I am just going Tue with the Cummins software this electronic stuff sucks for us older guys lol

It is a plus Brian I spoke with the CO I bought the Prolink Plus and the hardware from and they want me to send all 3 back something is wrong and he says the 2 pin will read both type of the M 11 electronics that is why he sold it to me and he said Cummins makes it hard on ProLink in order to sell there QC unit

Wow, this is getting deep.

Brain, to the best of my knowledge all engine sensor data is transmitted by J1708/J1587.  The later engines had J1939 to communicate with accessories like transmissions (our AutoShift communicates with the engine via J1939).  However, the J1939 does not transmit the engine sensor data to the data port connector.

To make things a bit more complicated, the 9 pin connector (6 wires) has both J1708 and J1939 data.  However, the J1939 data wires are there for analysis of the engine transmission function and not to get data.

Clifford, I think all bets are off with Sonnie, as he is working with a pretty cut up harness.  It could be that the Cummins folks hooked directly to the ECM and that takes a special adapter (perhaps the one you have - not sure).

If you can hook up with Bob Gilbert, you can use my ProLink to play with the engines.
