Fresh off the experience of seeing first hand with my S60 rebuild, how valve misadjustment can horribly affect the diesel engine , I decided to poke into the 4 cyl Yanmar that powers the gennie.

It has always run a little rough and stumbled a wee bit. It was aggravating because the stumble would wake me when we boonied.

The injectors were completely covered in carbon. The injector tube in the cyl head was partially occluded by carbon. I cleaned the injector and squirted ATM through the nozzles to check for gross problems. The valves were maybe a thou or two loose.

OH MY !!!!!!!!!!  I have a new generator for about three hours labor. I had no idea that a little TLC could make that much difference to a diesel engine. Go ahead and laugh at the newb learning, but wow what a difference.

Great job! Thanks for sharing. How many hours do you have on your genset?

2800 or so, and made in 1994. I don't think the motor had ever been touched, based on the paint being intact on all the fasteners.

Part of the big problem is the genset is 20Kw, and the motor a 35 Hp Yanmar, so most of the time the thing is not working very hard to burn anything off. I guess Newell wanted you to be able to run all the AC's, charge the batteries, run the clothes dryer, and the electric cooktop without a problem.

I should have taken pictures of how fouled the injectors were. I don't see how it ran at all.
