Ebay, Craigslist, Upillar....etc.

Why does so many use the word "e-place" for Ebay and "C-word" for Craigslist? I don't see the point, and we all know what is being talked about. And by now I don't think it is necessary to put the disclaimer that one has no attachment to any ad or item found or posted. Who cares? I don't. If someone was interested then it wouldn't make a difference if it was yours or not. We all signed up under the same set of rules, so we already understand the do's and don'ts and know how to sell stuff here. It is just one of those things that just won't die and keeps getting passed on for whatever reason. How about an education on how all of this unnecessary stuff got started.

Here is my gripe about Craigs list.....

Too many use some local slang term for where they are located, and then do not ever say where they are in the text of the ad. Here are some examples of ads currently on Craigs List that make my point: SLO, BHAM (okay, I can get pretty close with that one), Inland Empire, RMN.

On another forum I visit, when I made this complaint, I was actually chastised....with words something like this...."hey, Craigslist is local, quit using the search engines, if you don't know what or where "inland empire" is, then the
AD ISN'T MEANT FOR YOU!!!!!!"

I doubt the seller feels the same, yet they crafted their ad so that it does not make it easy to find out where they are if they have given no other clues in the ad as to their locations.

My other gripe is.....no descriptions of the item in eBay ads.

What about the people that think spelling their phone number does anything. I post my numeric phone number all the time and I don't get any wierd callls. Be my guest: 928 771-0045

It may just be me, but I think the more you dance around calling something by its correct name, the more attention you draw to it.

Like "the other board"

I have people who will send me tons of emails instead of one phone call to answer a problem, I just call them back, someone has to stop the madness, somehow....

Geoff, I may be wrong, and frequently are, however there are trolls, (Trollops, creatants, scuzbuckets, etc.) out here that have programs set up to 'harvest' phone numbers and email addresses and sell them to less that honorable creatants. I don't take the chance.
Someone correct me if I am wrong.

I remember asking why everybody fuzzed out their license plate numbers on a bike forum I was on. I didn't see the point and didn't bother and thought everybody was a tad paranoid. Then I got a pm from someone with my address, my age, my wife and kids names, etc.

I openly use my phone number and do not know of any problems, but all information is subject to collection and sale. As mentioned, license plate numbers can link to a whole lot of info. That is why in CA, as is many states, law enforcement personnel can opt to have all that info hidden. Using terms like Ebay, Craigslist, BNO, or Voldermort is a different matter. What about words like "bleep" and "bleep" and a whole bunch of other bleeping words?

You're not wrong, Jack. There's a big business in selling phone numbers (at least ones set to a person and not a business or FAX line etc) and email addresses. Unless you want to become fast friends with the president of the Nigerian Oil Company, banks who want to send you "gift" ATM cards, sellers of products to increase the size of some body parts, and some "unusually organized" charities, it's best to not write out your phone number and/or email address in a public forum.

Same here, I have heard about the trolls but have never had one call me. And if they did they wouldn't enjoy the conversation as much as I would! So is the perceived problem bigger than reality?

Ice cream works in several areas (taken internally not topically. I wouldn't want anyone to get frost bite), but I am not sure about the feet. However, if you have enough, you won't be able to see that the boots don't fit.
